Now THAT is an overstatement. It's been a, more or less, civil discussion about the lockdown of the Random Thoughts Thread and confined to a few threads.
If you want a meltdown, wait until McBackup gets his new start!

It seems like every thread I open has a backhanded shot at the absence of Random Thoughts.
Maybe I'm just being silly.

I'm not sure I would go that far.
I know with me it was just a case of something that had been allowed to thrive for a long time that appeared to be arbitrarily shut locked.
Personally, I think a better approach would have been to mention that there was a concern about potential topics being lost in RTT, and a request that if people saw a good topic in there then request the author to start a thread. The hip-hop posts may be an example. I'm sure there are more people who would be interested in them than just the ones who were posting them in RTT.
So a recognition that something could or should be put in a more visible place may have been all that was needed.
But it was the out of the blue lock then "taking away from the quality of the OT forum" that just sort of felt like a Phaneuf hit.

Meh. That'd be a fair amount of work for mods, the users would either under-react (ignore the pm) or over-react (op) and that would lead to even more work for mods.

I'm not suggesting the mods need to do this. Just let it be known that this is what the worry is/was.
I'm sure some people besides Mods would have no problem saying, "Hey, that would make a good thread. You should start one about that."

If I may have my own 2 cents
I was someone that would frequent the RTT and not worry about catching up on the post that I missed. I always felt it was a place to just hang out. There were plenty of regulars there too, so it added to the community feel of CP. I also felt that it kept the simple threads all in one place, and that it made more room for threads that would be more actively discussed.
I echo GirlySports thoughts. I understand the reasons for shutting it down but how sudden it was closed is the cause for this current reaction. There will always be hind sight, but I wonder if it was possible to maybe shared the thoughts with CP that the mods were thinking of closing the threads. Maybe a collective solution could have been found to keep all sides happy. However, as someone already said, this is Bingo's site, and he has the final say
The other thing I guess that kind of troubled me was the closing of the confession's thread. In it's prime, I thought it was a great thread and I think those with actual confessions looking for advice received the responses they were looking for. Granted, it has went down hill and became a Random thread. However, I was maybe thinking the mod could have just posted a warning to stay back on topic, otherwise it'll be closed.
Anyways, I don't want to second guess the mods here and CP has been a great place to be on the net for. We'll get use to CP: Post RTT

Perhaps it is the thanks button that does it. Which is too bad, because I like the idea of it and its easier to use that then get a string of "good post" replies... easier to organize a good post with who likes it, versus scrambling 30 replies to say "good post"
But I think the problem coming from it is, people are using it more for just choosing witty and funny posts (not always that funny, actually... although I do abuse that too) and most of the best posts that are backed up well are not thanked. I guess there's really no fix for that.

You took the works right out of my mouth, except for the thanks button which I still think is a great idea. After the RTT was shut down, you can sense the chat/one liners from that thread have made their way to the other threads. It was and still is common to see some of the same posters start a mini-conversation in a thread which eventually throws it off-topic. I think if some posters leave the personal witty remarks with people they know (or seem to know) in PM's and let the threads exist for on-topic discussion, then the "quality" of posts will eventually improve.
It's frankly a habit some will have to break, including myself now and then. I realize that the witty remarks and inside jokes have seemed to make CP a tighter community, but for some it makes it appear to be segregated a bit too. It's the segregation that brings us to this thread.

I am by no means a regular contributor and have not been around here that long. I have to say that I enjoyed reading the RTT and my biggest concern about closing two longstanding threads is best summed up in the quote below:

I believe however that there are smarter people than myself that make these decisions and I trust that their decision is probably what is best for the site. If people are here for the site (and not two threads) then they will direct their attention to other threads (or chat?) for the betterment of the site. If they are only here for two threads they will probably leave, and we will be better off for it?

Whats the big deal about locking the RT thread? All it was was about 10 posters rambling. I'm sure you guys can make a CP group and continue there.

What's the big deal about not locking the RT thread? Anyone who doesn't like it doesn't have to enter it.
Just saying it could work both ways. Personally I only went in there once in a while but never thought it would be a problem.
Oh well...we can already so the repercussions of it with many threads turning into chat threads instead of just one.

No one has to enter any thread they don't like doesn't mean that every thread topic should be allowed. Personally i could care less if it's locked or not even though it was kind of fun reading people random stories.
The random thought thread started just as that "random thoughts" then turned into a msn chat site between 10 posters so you guys have no one to blame but yourselves.

Well I count 60 odd posters who had more than 10 posts or more in that thread so I would say it is not about blaming 10 people.
I would just rather the random stories, thoughts be thrown into one thread instead of a dozen random threads when really that poster was just looking to get something off their chest, share a quick story, rant, chat or whatever.
Like I said, oh well! I just have already noticed with some threads they have turned into the same chat but now in a dozen threads.
