For those who battle tirelessly against the never ending onslaught of anti-vaccine propaganda, misinformation, and fear, there was great news the other day from Merck. The pharmaceutical company, and maker of the MMR vaccine against measles, mumps, and rubella, has decided not to resume production of the individual, or “split”, components of the vaccine.
this decision is a vote against irrationality and an anti-scientific worldview that has begun to endanger society. Many parents will be upset and disappointed by Merck’s decision, especially those who were just recently reassured by Dr. Sears that Merck was poised to reintroduce the separate components in 2011. The fact is, this was actually a bad decision for Merck from a purely economic perspective. It costs considerably more to manufacture, produce, and test combination vaccines than monovalent vaccines. Selling three individual components would also produce more revenue than a single combination product.

I am amazed how many people are putting their faith in hand sanitizers.
I guess at the end of the day, people are just afraid of things they cannot control.

Wow, I went by brentwood on the way home, figured I'd get it done if it was easy. Holy crap did I panic and want to get out of there. A lineup spanning multiple wings of the mall, snaking around each side, until it made it to some wretched looking clinic with people sitting in chairs. I think standing in that thin halled mall for 8 hours is more dangerous than not getting the shot. Geez... what an unsanitary gathering. Saw a few people hacking and weezing I freaked, started to sweat and bolted. Ugh... Gross. I hate people.

They showed some footage on CNN. Thousands of people standing in line in parking lots. Looked like a third world relief project.
They've declared this a state of emergency in the States. Now apparently it's for bureaucratic reasons (less paperwork, open up funding) but the phrase "State of Emergency" is going to make some people panic.
The Conspiracy Types are going to freak.
Anyway, can't you guys with family doctors just make an appointment with your doctor? Leave the shabby clinics to us losers?

I think that's what they don't want, doctors offices being backed up with flu shot or flu people stopping other people with doctor needy requirements.

It is true though, I never get the flu and never get the shots, why get this one if I don't need it.

My mom the nurse informs me that due to an allergy I have to bird feathers, I can't get the regular flu shot. I guess I should read up on this vaccine to see how similar it is, and find out if I'm allergic to this one or not. Since my wife is in a state where she's supposedly the most at risk type for this virus, I should take a few more precautions than normal to make sure I don't transfer it to her. I'm considering bringing my own water bottle to hockey with a cap to drink out of just for precaution. Normally the flue isn't a huge personal concern to me and I've got away with it. But this year I should be a bit more cautious.

I try to avoid getting the flu like anyone however that being said I am no expert but wouldn't it almost be better to get the flu and build your immunity up for when the virus gets stronger? I use to get sick alot more in my early twenties, I tend to think I've built a good immunity against it. I tend to be working around sick people all the time and rarely catch anything.

That's not how your immune system works.

The problem with H1N1, and they are already starting to see this in some places, is that it can quickly mutate. This renders any antibodies you have built up from previous illness/exposure, useless.

Want a surefire way to boost up your immune system?
Pick your nose, and eat it. No word of a lie. Discreetly, of course. No one wants to SEE you do it.
The hairs in your nose act as a sort of natural air filter as well as pheromone processors. Viruses and bacteria collect on these hairs, and then get absorbed into the mucous that forms on them over the course of the day. Absorbed, trapped, and defenseless. Through ingestion, they are then introduced into the body in a safe, unintrusive manner where your immune system will have no trouble overwhelming, destroying, and developing an immunity to that particular strain/mutation of ailment.
The George Carlin germ clip hits the nail right on the head. You don't want to live in an overly sterily environment because your immune system gets weak as a result. Obsessing about being germ-free WILL eventually bite you in the ass when you do get sick. On the same token, you don't want to surround yourself in filth for risk of overwhelming your immune system either.
There's a saying, 'That which does not kill me only makes me stronger.' And it's absolutely true.
In terms of the flu vaccine, I will not be getting it. For one thing, I don't trust the media and I don't trust the government to tell me what's best for me. The vaccine HAS been overhyped to the extreme, which leads the skeptic in me to wonder what the real agenda is? Who benefits most from mass vaccination? I leave it at that, I don't want to delve further into the question as it usually ends up de-railing into anti-pharmacorp babbling and/or bringing up the 'secret nanobots' included in injections. Possible, but a little farfetched for me.

I got my flu shot yesterday in Okotoks. It took me 2 hours waiting in line. Okotoks is way faster than Calgary as the lineup isn't as long (one clinic for 23,000 people as opposed to four clinics for 1 million people).
4 clinics for 1 million people... thats just stupid. Based on my experience, a clinic can vaccinate approx 150 people per hour. Thats 1800 people per day (12 hour day) x 4 clinics = 7200 people per day. 1 million people divided by 7200 = 138.8 days.
If the clinics are only open 5 days per week, it will take almost 28 weeks to vaccinate the entire population of Calgary. Thats just stupid. Who ever planned this should be fired.
