Default Paul Haggis renounces Scientology

Awesome and about damn time Mr Haggis

Quote:
Paul Haggis Renounces Church of Scientology in Blistering Letter

The Church of Scientology has long claimed many of Hollywood’s most elite talents amongst its members, but now, one famous Scientologist is leaving the church, and he’s not going quietly. In a candid, confrontational letter to Scientology top brass that’s just been published online, Oscar-winning director Paul Haggis (Crash) details the abuses and cover-ups that have forced him to to leave Scientology after 35 years. It’s a must-read.
Quote:
The church’s refusal to denounce the actions of these bigots, hypocrites and homophobes is cowardly. I can think of no other word. Silence is consent, Tommy. I refuse to consent.

I really wish this site had a token scientologist.

Better yet, I'd pay to have one.

I'm gonna be a debbie downer on this one, but why do religious threads get brought up here all the time by the same players? I'm not saying I agree/disagree, I just don't know why for no reason others come here to bash others' religions. Seems really odd to me.

I say we just elect a member to become a scientologist. I see the building here all the time, and I've always been tempted to go in and see what it's all about.

Is it actually possible to denounce something that had no credibility to begin with?

No, you don't. You think those "You've won a cruise" phone people are persistent? They've got nothing on Scientology.

If you do go, use a fake name, phone number, and address.

You consider Scientology a religion? Serious question.

Is it really any more absurd than, say, Mormonism? Serious question.

I think its a level above it yeah, I mean its a truly out there.

My problem with them is their aggressiveness with going after people who speak badly of them and how they force members to excommunicate with families, friends.

Very much a cult.

That's what I was going to ask...is Scientology really a religion? I guess you and I are on the same page on that one.

The fact that it is called the Church of Scientology has always piqued my curiosity. I'm guessing that one word was installed as a big ol' hairy marketing tool.

I'm guessing that the OPs that bring up these threads all read Pharyngula.

I thought renouncing Scientology was akin to leaving the mob?

Nice knowin' ya, Mr. Haggis...

Pretty familiar. I've read through the BoM and read accounts of the history - from both the pro- and anti- side.

Is any religion more credible than another?

They all make claims that cannot be proven...

I've met a lot of really kind and good Mormons. Never met any Scientologists, but it seems that that "church" churns out pretty standard creeps at a fairly regular rate.

Religion has proved for thousands of years just how stupid humans really are. The part of the brain that holds religion is an evolution mistake.

Momonism is certainly ridiculous but Scientology even manages to make it look somewhat rational.

This...How is an Alien race seeding the Earth anymore farfetched than a big man in the sky, or a book that only one man can read and hey, he lost the glasses to do it or whatever.

Religion: a set of beliefs concerning the cause, nature, and purpose of the universe, esp. when considered as the creation of a superhuman agency or agencies, usually involving devotional and ritual observances, and often containing a moral code governing the conduct of human affairs.

so yes by definition it is a religion
