Alternatives to Memory Express
Are there seriously no alternatives to memory express for good selection and prices of computer parts? As much as I like to order off NCIX and Newegg, I really wish there were more options in Calgary.
Memex never has close to the same selection as those two and often inferior prices. Entire product ranges and brands will disappear at times from Memex when they choose to stop carrying or ordering something for awhile.
I remember there was a hilarious time when the store called Memory Express basically only had 2 brands of RAM in stock.
There used to be BCOM computers across the street from Memex and I used to like their surprise specials but they went out of business in Calgary.
I don't hesitate to pay the extra $10 or so in shipping to NCIX, Direct Canada, Newegg, etc. especially with the weekly deals they have (Memex never has sales like these except during grand openings), but it would be nice to have a better selection of larger items.

Now that MemEx has a price match policy for any non clearance instock sales price in Canada (they even ignoring shipping), I find there to be no reason to go to an online retailer in Canada. Not with the convienience of having MemEx around and a 7 day return policy.
I recently built a sub $300 PC for a friend and MemEx matched the two prices I found at some obscure Toronto based stores with ME with no hassle.
Not having selection is another matter, but for what they do have in stock it's pretty hard to beat.

I'm curious, what were the specs on that if you have them handy?

Is that true? I'll have to do that then. Last time I checked, they wouldn't price match online retailers.

MemEx price matches ANY online advertised price, if the item is in stock, and does not add shipping if you pick up the product in store.
I've done it several times, on several different items.

I use shopbot.ca to find the lowest online price, and then pricematch it with MemEx to save on the shipping.
One time the price was close to 40% cheaper, they adjusted the price of the product lower the next day.
But I do agree about the less selection/stock. Their stock levels aren't the best, their selection is good, but sometimes missing a random hot item.

I work for a company called Geep Ecosys. We are located right across from the Deerfoot mall. I am sure we could get you any kind of Memory you need. We just listed a full page ad in the 24 hour newspaper today.

I would like a good computer put together for me. Nothing special, just 4GB Ram and a fast processor. I won't be storing anything like movies or music on the computer, just looking for something to surf the web on. How much will it run me? I already have a mouse, keyboard, monitor, etc.

This was for a buddy that's currently unemployed and we really had to get creative to stick to his budget. Dude desperately needed a new rig to apply / search for jobs. Admittedly, it was closer to $300 and did involve using a few old things from has last computer.
Asus M2A74 w/ Dual DDR, 5.1 Audio, Radeon 2100, Gigabit - $69. Onboard video yes, but about 2x as good as the usual Intel X45 onboard solution, good enough for his wife to play Sims3.
Athlon X2 240 Dual Core 2.8 Ghz - $69
2GB RAM - Something on Rebate that was only $25 AR. Can get more later as budget allows.
Seagate 500GB - $56
Case / PSU - used his old Seanix case with 350W PS. Ugly, beige, and zero USB slots, but it'll do.
DVD burner - some old POS from the Seanix. Ain't pretty, but it'll do.
OS - Used Vista Home from Kijiji (legit with serial) $50.
A few bux for GST, plus a few bucks for a couple of price matches as I recall. Got lucky admittedly with the used Vista from someone upgrading to W7, but hey, when trying to stretch your dollar, you've got to work for it!

haven't lived in Calgary for a number of years. Does "The Computer Paper" or "TCP" still publish? I use to read that regularly to find the countless little computer/parts stores in Calgary.
Had computers made by The Alchemist, OA Comp, ATX Comp, not to mention parts from a dozen other places. I imagine many of them have gone out of business

I know the paper you speak of and I used to read it, I'm sure they stopped publishing long ago.
