The issue as I see it is that in life there are no absolutes. On one hand there is no 100% guarentee that the vaccine will not have any negative side-effects (the 1976 vaccination campaign in the US provides an example), nor is there any guarantee that the vaccine will even 100% protect you from the current strain of H1N1. For whatever reason, when there is a choice of tradeoffs of possible negative outcomes people tend to ignore what the probabilities tell you and go with the 'do nothing option.' For whatever reason they think that doing nothing makes them personally less culpable if something negative happens. Even if that means doing nothing, getting swine flu, not dying themselves, but passing it on to others in which someone in their chain of infection actually does perish. Out of sight out of mind I guess.

I have asthma, a flu that causes serious breathing problems has a much larger probability of killing me than most of the population. The probability of me dying from H1N1 is much higher than me dying or suffering serious consequences from this vaccine. There are many people out there like me who won't have the ability to get vaccinated or who will still get sick despite getting vaccinated (Because it will only be 80 or 90% effective). People like me will die this winter and fall because of people who brush off getting vaccinated, thus allowing it to spread more than if more people were vaccinated. If I was someone who didn't have asthma, I'd still get the vaccination at the very least to do something to help those who are more vulnerable.
Giving you a "Thanks" just wasn't enough.

But people will just say nothing serious happened because there was nothing serious to begin with and go on about how evil the system is.

How about my reasoning? I got the flu twice in my 27 years on this planet. I got the flu shot twice in my 27 years on this planet. Funnily enough they were the same years.

I havent missed a day of work in over 6 years due to illness, My last flu shot, and getting the flu was 2002.

Would you get it if your were me?

Edit: I am not trying to convince people NOT to get the shot. I am just saying based on my experiences it doesnt seem to work for ME. Just because I wont be going for it, doesnt mean I am going to get it.
I have not been sick in over 6 years also, I have also not missed a day of work in that period of time either. But.... I work in a large Optometry practice with 40 to 80 people coming in every day. Many of these patients are elderly and very young. I also have pregnant females, people with Asthma and the immune-compromised in my office daily. I am going to take the Vaccine to improve their chances of not getting the virus. I know i would survive being exposed to H1N1, but they may not.

Flu clusters have broken out in more than 25 schools across the province, with rates of absenteeism climbing above 10 per cent in the last week. Some schools reported days when nearly 30 per cent of the students stayed home sick.

In the first 20 schools, swabs taken from students confirmed the sickness was due to the H1N1 flu strain rather than the seasonal influenza.

Hospitalizations have also slightly risen, although numbers fluctuate daily. To date, 160 Albertans suffering from severe symptoms have been admitted to hospital.
Of those, 16 were hospitalized in the past couple of days--the highest number seen since the first wave this spring.

"We are certainly expecting that this trend will accelerate, as it is happening also in other parts of the country," said Dr. Andre Corriveau, Alberta's chief medical officer of health.

"I urge all Albertans to get this vaccine, not only to protect themselves, but to protect those that are around them who may be at higher risk, and to do as much as we can to stop the spread of the virus as soon as possible over this coming season."

I find it hard to believe that there are people that have not been sick in 6-7 years. Not even a cold? What are the odds of that happening?

Unbreakable?

I have not been sick enough to miss a day of work. I will occasionally get stuffed up and feel something coming on, but within 12hrs i am fine.

I knew a guy back home who didn't miss a day of work in more than 20 years. Some people just have kick ass immune systems.

Like Hesla I've had the odd cold and been stuffed up but I haven't had to miss a day of school/work because of illness in 7 years.

My wife has been really sick once in the past ten years - she got whooping cough. Other than that she's gotten two extremely mild colds in that time span.

I, on the other hand, get sick all the time.

I don't think I've been sick enough to warrent a sick day from work since 1999. That said, I've taken a few sick days here and there because . . . I was worn out feeling like I was getting sick and my work is lenient.

I'll still be getting the flu shot.

Keep in mind that what, around 50% of Americans are overweight or obese. Americans (and Canadians) as a group aren't that healthy, the overweight and obesity rates here are disturbing.

Poor diet, lack of exercise, and malnourishment will all have significant effects on the immune system. It is really ironic that a large percent of people who are overweight or obese are actually malnourished, even with all the food they eat!

If you live a healthy lifestyle and take care of yourself, it's possible to go years without significant illness.

I'll look for CDN stats, but I doubt they are much different.

I don't see how you can go 6 months without an illness if you have children.

My wife works for Passport Canada and she deals with the general public daily, all day long..... and she is always getting sick. That place is like a huge virus incubator.

The funny thing is that she used to work in a hospital and she never got sick. I suspect its because she worked in the Scheduling Dept and the only people she saw on a daily basis were the other people in the dept.

My wife is definitely getting her H1N1 flu shot.... asap.... tomorrow. We're going together.

If this is the most important step to take in order to avoid the piggie flu than why hasn't the government implemented an effective way to get the vaccine out there.

The way this is being managed is a joke.

Edmonton has five clinics
Oattwa has five plus some other roving clinics
Winnipeg has 12

We have...four.

Terrible. The government's job is to manage big jobs like this and they are doing a very poor job of it.

Lol that's exactly what I thought.

I should wear a mask when I go, just for the fun of it. All the weird looks.

Ha ha... I was thinking that too. Good idea. We have a few of these in the back shop.

Maybe I should "borrow" a couple for my wife and I tomorrow while we stand in line.
