It is due to the tax laws on indian reserves. Casino's bring in a stupid amount of money. Add in the favourable tax rates and it's really a no brainer.

Ask natives about their casino's, that's a pretty typical response. i wonder why it's ignorant when i say it.

So you do this? You ask Native people about "their" casinos and they say they are doing it to rebuild their shattered culture?
I have to wonder what kind of situation you would find yourself in where this kind of conversation came up once, let alone often enough to conclude that one answer is "typical".

I've seen on it the news when they open new casinos, read it in magazines, observed it online, but no, your right, I should have to personally go ask all the natives to gather a reasonable conclusion

I always thought it was because they themselves like to gamble.

Sorry if this is ignorant, but do First Nations pay any tax to the Canadian governments (provincial or federal)? I assumed not because my understanding was that they are technically independent "Nations" that have their own governments. If that is the case, then my guess would be that they pretty much have free reign to build what they want on their own lands, and so they build big, money-making casinos and implement their own "taxes" against their casino earnings.
That's just a guess on my part, I'm not really well informed.

It's a very effective source of income in a place where there isn't a whole lot of outside revenue generated. Gambling also plays a role in many Native cultures, and did before Europeans ever came.
Lots of problems associated with the casinos as well, with addictions wreaking havoc with many people. This is just how it was explained to me the last time I went off about the Casino on the Kananaskis turnoff staining the landscape.

Just curious but neither of these replies offered an answer.
Is part of the justification not that it allows them to raise funds to help rebuild their shattered culture?
I'm aware theU is being sarcastic but I don't really have any other valid explanations.

The most logical justification I can figure is that these casinos are opened so the people that own them can make money.
The original post asked an interesting question that I can't answer. Some of the responses were just plain stupid and didn't answer the question either.

Yeah but why casinos? It is usually considered a vice and as such it seems that natives were given casinos because they are guaranteed $$ makers. Since lots of the governments didn't anticipate most of the money coming from natives, and thought it would come from people outised the reserves, I would think that would help the government justify their existence.

Why would anyone have to "justify their existence"? There are casinos all over town. Who justifies their existence? Why were white people given casinos?
My uneducated guess is that casinos make a lot of money, so someone, somewhere, decided to build a casino on an Indian Reserve in order to make a lot of money.
If a casino on an Indian Reserve pays less taxes or somehow makes more money than one in the city, good for them.

I wonder if they like having casinos because casinos are big money makers and relatively easy on land. I mean, they could drill for oil, but then they're risking f'ing up their land. A casino is one building that generates alot of money, and also jobs.
Doesn't seem like a big mystery to me. What are the alternatives (haha! I said natives!)? There are few businesses that can exist on an island. A casino is one of them. People come, spend, and leave. Kinda makes perfect sense to me.

Over 90% of all profits going into a normal casino goes to the governemnt, right now most casino's in this city are loosing money ( 3 are on the cusp of being closed down )
I highly doubt the native casino's pay anything to the government, which is why so many native bands open these up, huge cash cow....
Keep in mind the payouts based on the percentage of money in to payouts to it's customers is regulated by the government.....no such laws inplace on the reserve casino's it's not hard to see when you play your favorite game from one casino to the native casino and your payouts are a 1/3 of what they normally are....
Since the ringroad BS ( not to drag this into this thread ) I've Boycotted going to the reserve to play any games. I'd rather my money goes to the devil I know not the one i don't....atleast it has a chance of funding something I use, roads, medical, ect than knowing 100% of it will never help me out what so ever...

i live on a small reserve and i work at a VLT vendor. i know that at our place we make a stupid amount of money a night and the deposit we make at the end of the night goes to our cheif and council. we don't get taxed on our profits.
not saying that's the deal with other reserves, but for is it's an easy way to make money for our band and reserve. although honestly, most people don't see any of it because our council is corrupt. but that's a story for another day.

When another day comes I would be interested in this story. There are a lot of ignorant comments made on internet message boards, from myself as well, and I would really be interested on an insiders take.
