VOD is another one.
Then there is contracts and having to buy a recevier for each room.

But again, to each its own.
As someone who worked as a TSR for Shaw, and has owned both a Shaw and Bell PVR, I would say that Shaw's PVR is vastly inferior. Way more glitches than the Bell PVR. I notice the HD for Bell being a lot better, too. Shaw seems to have more compression artifiacts, and also justw seems generally fuzzy at times. Bell was crystal clear for me.

Again, I have no loyalty to either company, but I hate having Shaw because they are so far behind the times. Seriously, Bell gets evey NFL game in HD (with Sunday Ticket. Even with Sunday Ticket, I can usually only get four different games (not counting Sunday and Monday nights) in HD with Shaw.

blame the CRTC. the fact that they make Shaw broadcast 33 channels in analog is what's slowing down the HD transition, while cable companies in the states are free from that now with the transition down there to all digital. Bell is also exempt from this, giving them much more digital bandwidth. 1 analog channel is equal in bandwidth to 4 digital channels or 1 HD channel, so once our government gets with the times and forces everyone to go digital you'll likely see some rapid changes with all Canadian cable companies
