I just got over a flu a couple days ago, and it's kind of funny because before that I was of the big-tough-guy mentality that H1N1's just a bug and nothing I can't handle like any other flu I've had in my life but once I was sick I started worrying about whether I had H1N1 or just a normal flu and should I go to the doctor to find out (I never go to doctors unless it's really serious), and was remembering the news about the girl in the States who didn't go to the doctor because she didn't have health insurance and died from H1N1. All these worst-case scenarios you hear about came flooding to mind.
I always blew off the crap you hear in the news as propaganda but Im kind of ashamed to admit that it has affected me.
hmmm. I think I'm going to see how it all plays out. I've never had a flu shot in my life but with the unknown consequences of H1N1 i'm not going to completely rule it out. I went to the US and Australia last summer when the virus was really picking up. I remember coming back from the trip and having the worst flu I've ever had in 10 years. For 3 -4 straight days though, I just confined myself to my room. Got plenty of rest and kept eating. While I got through the absolutely hellish week, I was able to recover fine. I'm hoping that whatever I had was the swine flu so that I have the antibodies for it.
Where do they stab you when you get these shots? If it's in the shoulder, I might go get it. If it's in the vein on the inner elbow, there's no way in hell I'll go.

I was watching TV last night with the wife and I swear to god they were showing people getting H1N1 shots and this girl was getting the needle stuck up her nose. I dunno wtf that was about, but holy crap if that's how they give it to you...

There's a nose inhaler option I think. Works great if you have collapsed veins from too much smack.

There is a spray version of it that goes up your nose. It's not a needle... it's like vapour spray.

Also, in the rare circumstance that I do catch it, I get a week off school and all the material that I miss out on, test included, is required to be provided to me by my profs at my convenience.
Do you have any medical sources to back this up? Everything I've read has said the opposite, with children and elderly being at most risk (as always), and there are clearly many many time more people getting sick and/or dying from regular seasonal flu.
I'm not 100% set on this one. If I start reading from enough credible sources that I should be getting this shot, then I will; but I don't want to get it based simply on mass panic and news sensationalization.
While H1N1 mostly causes mild disease, some people – estimates suggest fewer than 1 per cent – become deathly ill, very fast.
At a meeting last week in Winnipeg, Canada, experts warned that these cases could overwhelm hospitals. "These were the sickest people I've ever seen," says Anand Kumar, an intensive care expert at the University of Manitoba in Winnipeg.
This is an older article, but it outlines a potential problem. But this flu has also been effecting healthy middle aged women more so than average. The only mass panic and over sensationalized that is happening is on the internet and in the media. But honestly would you get your medical advice from them? The Public Health Agency of Canada is much better source for information.
A lot of you guys are underestimating what it's like to get really sick, and the consequences on you and others. I had viral pneumonia last year that kept me virtually bedridden for almost three months. It's stressful and onerous for those that have to pick up your slack.
I hope none of you anti-science guys get H1N1, but if you do you should be ashamed of yourselves for not doing everything you could to protect yourself and your loved ones.

Do you have anything to back up that many, many more people are getting the seasonal flu right now? I was at the doctor yesterday and he indicated that basically the only flu in the population right now is H1N1.
Influenza kills 2000 - 8000 Canadians every year. Swine flu has so far killed 86.
I'm not sure which is the worst at this exact moment right now, but it's safe to say thousands will die this year from more common influenza's. Whether they're out there now, or coming in 3 weeks, they're coming as always.
If swine starts to get into those ranges of death, I'll line up for a shot too.

Some quick research finds that yes, it is more sever for people 19-64, than people 65+, however neither are considered high risk groups. So, I'm still in a low risk group, just not as low risk as my senior friends.
Primary group for the shot is:
-People under 65 with chronic health conditions
-Pregnant women
-Children 6 months to less than 5 years of age
-People living in remote and isolated settings or communities
-Health care workers involved in pandemic response or the delivery of essential health care services
-Household contacts and care providers of persons at high risk who cannot be immunized or may not respond to vaccines
But that's what the flu vaccine does...it preps your immune system with a dead virus so if you come into contact with the live virus your immune has a very good chance at blocking it without the risk of getting sick and/or transmitting the virus to other people. Also the flu changes every year so if you get the shot (or not) or the actual flu this season it won't provide you with any immunity for next years strain.
Also the flu is one of those words that people use all the time incorrectly. 24 hour flu doesn't exist. When people are sick for a day or two it's almost a guarantee that they don't have the flu (most of the time). The flu is in your system for around 2 weeks. You won't just miss one day of work. Ask Transplant, it wasn't easy on him. Of course it does effect people differently. Some get knocked on their butt, others not as bad, some need to be hooked up to ventilators and of course some die.
Dead Virus is not equivalent to an Alive Virus no matter how much work they do.

So no real back-up to say that, right now, the seasonal flu is more prevalent than H1N1? Unless I misunderstood my doctor yesterday, he basically said that everyone getting the flu right now is getting H1N1, not "seasonal flu".
Anywho, I live with a high risk person who's already been in intensive care with lung problems once in her short life. I'll take any and all shots they want to give me if it helps keep her a little more safe.

I'm sorry but I find this to be the most pathetic thing I've read on this subject to date.
Ashamed of ourselves? For what? For making a choice we have the RIGHT to make? For making a choice that we feel is INFORMED? For making the choice that, like you, is the correct one for our situations?
You have your right to make your choice. We have the right to make ours.
But to stand there and pull this "Better Then You" crap is pathetic. Utterly pathetic.
I could in the same breath say "I hope all you guys who got the shot and forced it upon your children are ashamed of yourselves for harming innocent and healthly people if any deadly or paralyzing side effects happen" but you know what, I don't. I just suggest that while you have your right to choose to get this shot, I disagree.
As I said earlier, these scare tactics and hype are not going to win anyone over and certainly not how you prove a point.
Nearly all NEW vaccines these days are merely vaccines of convenience, they are for people who can't afford to miss a few days of work, etc.
I'm not saying that they aren't effective, or aren't safe, they are just unnecessary.
Some people will die of H1N1 despite having gotten the vaccine, and GASP! some people will not die despite not getting the shots.
Well the typically seasonal flu kills about 30,000 in the US and hospitalizes 200,000 every year. The flu vaccine is the single best way to fight the flu, so no it's not unnecessary.
