The box
So in a continuing quest to find out what kind of monsters I'm dealing with on this board. I present the next ethical question.
In the latest movie based on the book "The box"
If someone offered you a million dollars to push a button that would kill someone at random around the world would you push it? How long would it take you to decide? Would you feel guilt afterwards?
Personally
Would I push it? Yes
How long would it take? I like shiny buttons so I would have pounded the button about 10 times before he managed to explain what it did
Would I feel guilt? I would stop reading newspapers and watching the news at the moment that the money was in my hands so I could pretent that nobody died.

Chances are, you wouldn't even find out about the person who died. Odds are they would be from China, or India.

Awww, I thought this was going to be about the Montreal pop group from the 80s.
Misleading title.
Edit: and what was the book? I saw an old Twilight Zone episode that used the same premise.
Edit2: The Twilight Episode episode wiki entry (and it also mentions the movie and the original short story.

I don't know what I'd do. I prefer not to delve that deeply into my inner workings. Which I guess, if I think about it a little harder, means I'd probably push it and I'd prefer to be in denial about that fact.

Not the one...

Years of "ten children died of starvation during your last poop" have desensitized me to stranger's deaths.
I'd cash in.
I will say that I would feel terrible about it and would pledge to redeem myself using (most of) the dirty money.

Would I push it? No
1. I would never want to be responsible for someone losing a family member.
2. Karma's much to evident in my life to even consider something like that.

Not a chance.
That would be the 13th circle of hell.

The first question, yes.
The second question, how long is the contract for?

Interesting, lets say its limited to a one year term, and lets say that I remove your name from the random kill formula. so of all the people in the world, you'd have your one year term, you'd be safe for the rest of your life unless, you don't meet quota which is one button pushed every day for that whole year.

Would you accept $10,000 to kill a deer?
$100,000 to kill a pet dog?

Hmmmm...
I initially said no right away because you would see the absolute worst in people. Now that I think of it, you could also see the best as well.
Though, I just wouldn't want to be held responsible for placing people in that situation.

The Deer: Considering how much I pay each year to do it, you're damn right I'd accept $10,000 to do it.
The Dog: Only if it could fit in a mailbox

If pushing a button meant that someone good could die, I don't think I could. Imagine if you took out someone who was destined to be a major influence in millions of lives. That would suck.

I would push it, and the only way I wouldn't feel guilty is if it ended up being you that I killed.

Is 1 life = 10 million dollars...well I don't think I can answer that. I can however say that 10 million dollars can save alot of lives.
I'd push the button, i'd then take the 10 million dollars and donate it to something like the CCF. 10 million dollars buys alot of food, alot of medicine, and alot of technology needed for infrastructure in developing/third world countries.
Yeah I'd probably have to live with the guilt that someone out there in the world died a meaningless death because of me, that's the price that has to be paid...but in the words of Tetragammaton Cleric John Preston "I'd pay it gladly"
