Here in Tokyo gas is now at 126 yen a litre - about 1.40~1.45 per litre. Funny thing is, before this oil price surge gas was around 105~110 yen a litre. For whatever reason it just sat around that price for ages and just recently (5-6 months ago) started to move up. Must have been some surplus purchasing in Japan for a while is my only guess, or the companies in NA are fataing around with prices.
Not that I'm a conspiracy theorist or anything...

Hey Lanny,
Any idea if prices are like that throughout the Southwestern States? We are planning a road trip down through Vegas, LA and up the California and oregon coast. If gas is that cheap that is going to save some bucks.

California has very high gasoline taxes and their prices are among the highest in the country.

uh, gas thread people....
our friends in Europe laugh at our pain where its $3 a litre for gas. Just gives me more excuses to ride the bike.
|
It's actually feasible to ride the bike, walk, or take public transit in dense European and Asian cities. North American metros on the other hand suffers from major urbal sprawl and as such we use our cars a lot more than Euros and Asians, only a minority of them even own cars whereas everyone in this town likely has a car, beater or Lexus.

can't be sure but i think $1/litre is a mental barrier, a lot of people will take transit if they were borderline before.
|
Disagree...
EVERY 10-cent increment is a mental barrier. We always seem to get over them quite quickly and continue our consumption unaffected.
I think the only thing that would seriously affect consumption is a sudden price jump of 100% that would really mess with people's budgets and minds. Only that would provide impetus to radically change habits (ditch the SUV or buy a transit pass).
However, that said...
My resentment over gas prices is not really subsiding as fast as it used to. I still fill up the car, but I feel like I'm getting bent over at the time. This all started when the 3.5 cent "discount" was started, because that just showed me how much of a bunch of crooks the gas companies are.
Any economists here who can tell me how much of a factor gas prices are on the CPI?

They can drive the CPI up by a few points.
Statcan released this a few weeks ago. Gas prices are still on the rise so I wouldnt be surprised to see it rise a few more % points from last year..

About 75 to 80 cents per liter is the conversion.
They don't drive prices up for no reason. Spring / Summer gas prices always go up, especially in Canada, as people drive more, and drive farther.
I think alot of the price increases lately, can be attributed to the futures market.
Also, China has become a major player in oil consumption.

Don't forget the US gallon is smaller (1 US gallon = 3.7854118 litres), so it would boil down to .660 to .726 US per litre.
That'd be pretty close to fotze's estimate when you factor exchange rate.

I was in San Mateo, CA a couple months back and gas was $2.40 a gallon when it was $2.05 in Phoenix. I would suspect it would be up substantially, almost to Canadian levels. Chek out the following link for continent wide pricing.

They aren't trying to be, they are. China can buy oil off the world market, they don't need to get it exclusively from CNOOC or any other Chinese oil companies.
China's oil consumption went up an estimated 25% from 2003-2004.

And with Russia diverting the construction of a major pipeline to Japan, that could make things veeery interesting in that neck of the woods.

Sweet. Thanks for the info guys.
We leave tonight and the prices are far cheaper in the States. That is going to save some cash.
Check that: In California it is $3 a gallon in some places. That is going to hurt.

I live in the U.S. and around here gas has just climbed to $2.45 per gallon. I dunno what that computes to in Canadian money and liters, but I'm sure it's just as outrageous.
Specifically I'm from Florida, and I really just wish they'd start drilling in the Gulf of Mexico already. Some people are complaining it would hurt tourism cuz of the eye-sore, but c'mon, it'll be miles off shore you won't even be able to see it. Besides that, it'll actually probably be a good spot for fishing of all sorts, because of the heat the derricks let off.
Of course there's the obvious environmentalists who have a problem with the rigs destroying the coral reefs, but I would still rather have the oil to drive down some prices at the pump. The same is true for all the oil in the Alaskan Pipeline, I'm pro for drilling up there as well.
