Surprise Apple Hardware Updates Tomorrow (Tuesday)?
There's a little thing going on between Fake Steve and John Gruber... but out of that, comes this:
Quote:
Dan Lyons Apparently Thinks Yours Truly Hasn’t Heard About the Redesigned Plastic MacBooks, Redesigned (‘Impressive’) iMacs, Updated Minis (Including One That Ships With Mac OS X Server), the Multi-Touch Magic Mouse, and, as the Wildcard I’m-Not-Sure-I-Really-Believe-It-Myself Out-There Rumor, Maybe Even Some Sort of Mentioned-Nowhere-Else-But-in-This-Very-Headline Multi-Touch Trackpad Gadget for Desktop Macs That Apple Is Set to Release Tomorrow Morning

$1100 is a massive ripoff for a Mac Mini server, although I suppose that's cheap as far as OSX Server goes. For that price you could build yourself a nice NAS, and get a regular mini for use as an HTPC.

The Mac Mini Server is not an HTPC, its a server. Small and large business use them.
Here's a server room in Vegas with 10,000 minis that controls many casinos video surveillance and slot islands.

I wonder why they would use 10K Mac Minis for that.
Why not setup some Windows Server or Linux rack mounts. Save on space and administration.
Or does Apple sell the Mac Mini for this type of arrangement. Do they have management tools for this type of setup?

How do you charge that thing? It looks like another hermetically sealed Apple product, but I can't spot any charging contacts.
Edit: Apparently it takes two AA batteries. Who'd have thunk.

The Mini takes up a quarter of the space the 1u xServe did, it's silent, cheep as borscht and apple has these:

Unreal. The new low end plastic MacBook has the same specs as my top of the line macbook 4 months ago. I paid 1849. Now it's 1099. Fata this technology crap. And it has a better battery.

I'm actually really angry. How does a product drop half it's price in 4 months?

None of those explain why a Casino would use it to run their cameras though it though. A university for research sure.
Also in a single cage you can get get over 50 blade servers with more power then the minis and a couple of external rack arrays with more storage. The only reason I can see for that is that they want each camera on a separate server for legal reasons. The management, space, extra switches wouldnt seem to justify it IMO. Another legit reason might be hack/virus protection. Because Mac Servers are so scarce they arent many tools out there to hack them - likely reduces the amount of amateur hacks they have to deal with compared to a Windows/Linux system.
I am not saying its not cool looking, it is. But even in that pic they arent compacting the minis so much that they save any space (probably heat reasons).
What are slot islands? Does that mean the video camera, or the wining % for those machines, if its controlling the win % then I can see why they use that setup.

It's cost competitive with Windows Home Server offerings, but brings all the services a SMB office would require, with unlimited client licenses to boot.
Throw in hosted Exchange and maybe online backup via Mozy, and you have a very compelling little server package for SMB offices.

That picture is from macminicolo.net , and hosting Mini's is their schtick. They themselves are co-located at a larger datacentre, so that pic is only representative of a small portion of everything in that datacentre (a single cage) The idea was that the mini is a small little box you can configure and ship/have shipped to/from their location with little or no hassle.
