and crude prices keep on climbing based on absolutely nothing. Inventories are actually quite high right now. What a joke.
Saudi's King died last week didn't you hear? Price hike isn't based on absolutely nothing, they usually come up with great excuses like that.

just one more reason not to live in vancouver.

hey, that was un-called for.....but I got a couple more if you want
I'll list them out for you since I recently stopped by your wonderful metro:

East Hastings: that's a given

unmarked RCMP cars: they are way more stealth over there, how the hell are you suppose to guess a Champagne Gold Pontiac Grand Am would be a cop car? almost got me [/b][/quote]
East Hastings is disgustin and definitely gives Van a bad rep........but there's more to van than that..........Truly, Vancouver is an absolutely beautiful city, but like any other place, has its bad areas.

Well $65 a barrel for Oil is not the end of the world for Alberta. Every other country in the Western World save the U.S. is paying a lot more than what we are for gasoline. Everytime the price goes up, I try to think of ways to keep my consumption down so that I use less of the resource every time the price goes up. Now I'll admit that living in a small town and living only 5km from work makes that easy for me.

I love visiting Vancouver if only for the food, but I'd definitely not want to live there, just hearing the Canuck drivel with the mindless droids they call "fans" is alone to drive me nuts.

Tofino and Victoria, that's another story, I'd love to retire on the island one day

Gas prices don't bother me at all, it's still cheaper than bottled water which I practically live on. And it's a miniscule part of my overall budget.

vancouver is a beautiful city to visit, but not to live in. the bar scene is pretty good. the culture is cool, like the orchestra, the views, the harbors. oh and that tunnel under the river.

but there is the crime. and the cops are vicious, they are LAPD north. traffic. racist xenephobia. arrogance towards the rest of BC that pays its way. and the skytrain - wake up, it is not impressive at all.

most of that is simply because of its big-city size. calgary is made up of people from small towns all over, that is the major attitude difference.

Its gonna be hard to sit here and convince a Calgary board that Vancouver is better than Calgary, but I do love living here. I live in North Van which is away from all of the cons of living in Van.(ex....not noisy, not much crime, not super busy)

Like it says in my signature, I love Vancouver, I just HATE their hockey team, and that includes their fans........although, I only have about 2 buddies who arent canuck fans, and they are oiler fans

BTW.....sorry for turning this poll into a Vancouver thread....

nope.

it is way more expensive though, and took way more time and pain to get 'completed'.

Ehh, the metro in HK isn't bad.. I preffered Singapores though. Problem with HK's in the area where you wait for trains in really small and crowded, a bit of a pain.
But really, major metro's in Asia have great MRT's..
(except the ones that have more than one company operating different lines. I'm looking at you KL)

http://www.answers.com/topic/vancouver-skytrain

TransLink decided in 2004, however, to instead develop a street-level light railway for Coquitlam. [2] (http://www.translink.bc.ca/files/boa.../4.1report.pdf) It is hoped that contracts will be awarded in the autumn of 2006, allowing construction to begin in 2007. For more information, see TransLink's page on the line (http://www.translink.bc.ca/Plans_Pro...theast_Sector/). TransLink are inviting the public to suggest names (http://www.translink.bc.ca/nameyourline/default.asp) for the new line.

it was hoped to have most of what is now built, done in 86, ten years before it actually got to that level. nice try vancouver, but not everyone lives in surrey and vancouver! there actually are people that drive in from the burbs, every day, an hour+ each way.

http://www.translink.bc.ca/Plans_Pro...theast_Sector/

2009

5 years in vancouver-speak is at least 10.

the olympics will sneak up on this city like industrial-strength laxative, it will be a complete disgrace.

I recently took a course with a prof who is a specialist on transit around the world. Apparently, Calgary has one of the top transit systems in North America, and Vancouver's is relatively crappy in comparison. Reasons for this are a number. Per capita, we have one of the highest user rates in NA, with about 200,000 trips/day on our transit. Secondly, because of the Olympics in 1988, and subsequent updates, our transit is not nearly as out of date as it is in many areas. Also, it's not nearly as confusing. (Have you ever seen a map of the NY subway system?! WTF?! How easy for a visitor to get lost there, whereas it's fairly strightforward in Calgary). And one of the biggest reasons that our transit is ranked highly is because of transit 'towns'. Areas where a person lives, and shops, right near transit. Transit becomes more widely used when people don't have to drive for groceries or whatever. The Sunnyside train station is an excellent example of this type of situation. You get off, Safeway is right there, on your way home. To get higher transit usage, train stations need to be built at the same time as the area around them. When a train station is built with a grocery store, shopping mall, and condo complex all within two blocks, the people in the condo complex are very likely to use the train. That's a well built transit system. One that encourages people to use it.

This same prof actually went to a conference in Vancouver to discuss the needed improvements to their transit system, and basically said it's going to take hundreds of millions to fix it, but because they only have 5 years, they'll probably screw it up, and put train stations in places where there can be no transit villages.

Besides, I took the train from Burnaby to a ferry station, and it took 2 hours to get across town. That screams a lack of planning. They have this huge double length bus, but it only goes every half an hour. Stupid. And passes start at $69, but that only gets you around downtown. If you need all three zones, it's $130/month. A $70 pass will get you all over Calgary.

higher gas prices -> higher reliance on transit.

can't be sure but i think $1/litre is a mental barrier, a lot of people will take transit if they were borderline before.

yes, europe has crazy high prices. we are lucky.

but still p*ssed off.

Look on the bright side: With gas a buck a litre, it's easy to figure out how much your gas tank will hold.

Looks like any excuse now drives up the cost of Oil. Tomorrow it will be because the wind was blowing so know oil is $66 a barrel.

Well there go my hopes of driving regularily once I get a U-Pass again.

Just don't see it being worth the money to drive everyday. Especially with the bus only taking 20-30 minutes to get me to school.

Unless I car pool with like 4 people. $1/L....insane.

We shouldn't be too concerned. Seriously, the Brits really get shafted when it comes to gas.
