Not sure if it was real or not because Bingo and the mods keep stuff like that fairly hush, hush, but AFAIK it had to do with someone claiming that Dohboy frequently knowingly lied in his column just to stir the pot.

Basically it was libel/slander. Also a judge had just made a ruling in Ont IIRC that things posted on a message board can be considered slander/libel and the owners of the message board had to pay damages for allowing such content to go unpunished.

Personally I think it is a joke because frankly it is freedom of speech and I hardly consider posting on CP "publication" which is required for slander/libel to be real.

Bottom line is that if it was true and what the poster said wasn't totally crazy then Dohboy is just a jackass.

No, as far as I'm aware that's text book slander. Slander doesn't have to be official publication, it can be spoken verbally from layperson to layperson.

From the bits I've put together that isn't correct, but alas it's an extremely sensitive issue and I'll respect the mods in wanting to keep the situation under the carpet.

Without seeing the post any judgement on our part is pure speculation.

Realistically though based on my knowledge of the situation and some of the stuff written on CP there could literally be 500 cases of libel a day on CP.

Basically any time you intentionally or not and truthfully or not say something negative about another person you could potentially be sued for libel.

I've seen so much stuff said, even from mods, that puts a person in a negative light we could all be in trouble every single day.

I can see why Dohboy might want to refute those claims but there are better ways of doing it than threatening to sue CP over some random post. Furthermore Dohboy has had some pretty harsh run-ins via email and such with CPers that puts him in a negative light. One such incident IIRC involved Arloiginla emailing him telling Dohboy his column was bunk and he replied something to the effect of "Well you're a loser who's probably writing from his mom's basement and I'm a famous newspaper journalist." It was sad really.


As for slander/libel being applicable even in casual conversation it is unlikely you could ever get sued for that. If I was walking down the street and made that claim about Dohboy and he overheard it is highly unlikely he could sue me for it.

As for whether or not internet forums is part of formal conversation/publication is up for debate. It is generally considered that for something to be slander/libel it has to be spoken in a public manner. ie on TV, in a newspaper, on a blog etc.

an Internet based community is more akin to conversations in a bar or pub, with content being written as an ongoing dialog which is generally not edited or regulated such as in the publishing industry.[7]

FTR I don't think that posters should be allowed to post stuff like that and that mods should regulate it. However, that doesn't change the fact I hate Dohboy.

One of my biggest dissappointments in CP history related to a D'oh Boy incident.

He had penned some article that was the usual trash that was posted as a thread here on CP. I penned a counter article and posted it in the same thread. Took me about 10 minutes to come up with "journalism" that far surpassed that clown. If memory serves, I even floated the thought that this is what a good writer like Cowperson could come up with. "Lick The Salt Block" or something to that effect, essentially spoofing taking things with a grain of salt.

It was a funny "article" and received some great laughs.... but when I went to search for it a couple months later as a reference for something... it was gone. Not only it, but the whole thread.

The Mods tried to find it but it was gone... forever... and I didn't keep a copy of it. I have written a lot of stuff on CP (moreso in the past), but THAT one was a piece that I felt had some magic and timing. To lose it in cyberspace really, really pissed me off. And I can only blame Ballistic Diarhea for that one. Well, he and his lawyers....
