So I thought I would try and give the 1.5TB a whirl but I am unable to get it working so far. It recognizes the drive but it says it is unable to format it. I am using

http://www.memoryexpress.com/Product...S%28ME%29.aspx

I have plugged it into my desktop and it recognizes that an external hard drive has been connected but I don't get another drive appear on my computer.

Did I do something ######ed? Do I just need to go buy a 1TB HDD instead? It seems that I should be able to get the 1.5TB working from the reading I was doing. I didn't have much time to play around last night on my computer, does it take a while for the drive to appear because the HDD is so big?

Thanks for helping with my noobery.

Sounds like your drive is defective if your PC can't even read it.

On your PC, you can try right clicking on "My Computer" and going to "Manage". This will let you do all sorts of fun things like formatting, assigning drive letters, etc. That will help you determine whether or not there is an actual drive problem.

When I plugged my 1TB hard drive into my cable box on the weekend, it took a few power cycles. I even called Shaw as I thought that it wasn't going to work, and tech support's suggestion was to turn both off and unplug from wall (for the HD, the power switch should be sufficient). Plug back in. Wait a bit for the cable box to "come around" but don't turn it on. Once everything seems to be idle, turn on ONLY the HD and not the cable box.

It didn't work the first time, but the second time I saw a prompt on the screen (even with the cable box still off) asking me if I wanted to format the drive.

After that it only took a minute or two to format and then I was in business.

When I called shaw I referred to it as the "PVR Expander", which is essentially their hard drive that they sell to you. I figured I might get better help if they thought it was their own product. The guy didn't even question it - the instructions are the same.

Let me know how it turns out.

I have the format screen but when it trys to format it says it can't. I might have to go and get the 1TB HDD

Less pr0n for me i guess.

That's too bad - the roughly $30 difference between 1 and 1.5 TB would have been worth the cost, IMO, for that extra half-terabyte.

Unless, as someone else mentioned, there is a problem with the drive... not sure if you feel like going to Memory Express and swapping it for another 1.5, only to have to potentially go back again and swap it for a 1TB drive.

Nice. Channel 232 is Score HD. They've also added History HD on 231.

So Boblobla, tell us if your 1.5 TB hard drive worked, or did you need to get the 1TB drive? I hear that if your hard drive enclosure also has a USB port then it will not work on the Motorola and it looks like the one you purchased from Memory Express also has USB

Yes... do tell. My bro-in-law has a motorola version that I'm sure he'll be trying to "expand" very soon.

Although a different model, my Pace-style box works fine with my enclosure, and that's got USB on the back too. I would think that it shouldn't matter if USB is there or not, as long as you're not using it. Could be wrong though.

apparently you can change your internal drive to 1TB as well, but can it still see the eSATA one for the total of 2TB? Anyone tried that?

Naw, we've had EHDs for a year or so now but being the good guys we are, we didn't want to crow about it in this thread and spoil your fun. Nice to see you're catching up with the times, enjoy.

I havn't tried this but I've heard it will work with Bell and it would probably be the ideal enclosure for replacing HDs as they fill up.

Maybe this would work with Shaw?

So the 1.5TB HDD is a no go. The box doesn't know how to format a HDD that size apparently.

i did. but not every esata hard drive is compatible. Western Digital was recomended to me, and it worked. Accomdata did not.

This thread made my day. I can't believe I didn't see it before.

I saw that Shaw was offering their new PVRs and expanders. I was creatively thinking of a way I could justify spending money on a new PVR. I didn't realize I could expand my current Motorola PVR until now.... and $110 for a TB is awesome.

Thanks for all the info everyone! CP rocks!
