His power is Terrakinesis, which is earth-moving. He's able to manipulate ink like in the episode where he puts himself into the newspaper clipping in Peter's apartment because it's homemade ink, so it is presumably made from natural/organic minerals etc. The ink he puts in Lydia's back, he has no power or control over; he just gives her the ink with which she can predict the future/find people etc.
Sometimes I think people focus too much on what the specials can do. I, personally, don't like it when every last detail of every character is explained; I like some mystery. I think that's why Sylar was so intriguing and such a popular character when he was first around. I mean, think back to the episode in season 1 where Parkman shot at him, turned around, and then he was gone. We all know Sylar couldn't fly, and that he didn't have Claire's ability -- so how did he survive? How did he get out of there so quickly? It's just something you'll never know, kinda like the carnival teleporting.
I kinda like Claire's storyline right now. It's kind of showing her that, even when she tries to live and thinks she is living a "normal" life, not everything is normal. I think they're going the right way with the Gretchen/Claire stuff -- it seems natural and not really that forced, to me anyway.
As for Samuel recruiting people to the carnival, he said in the first episode that it was time they all came "home". When he tried recruiting Peter, he said he needed to replace Joseph, who was presumably an empath. So I think it's a case of needing to
replace one person, but "recruiting" as many people as will listen.
