I deleted it for a few months but found that (unfortunately) I was missing out on too much. Missed events, keep current with friends from out of town, and yes, birthdays. It's a shame that it's become essential in some ways. I log in once a day before bed to check if anything needs attention, then leave after about 5 minutes.
The problem with facebook, at least to me, is that I just don't care about what people are doing or saying to each other. As far as photo updates go...It's a place to gloat about yourself and feel important. The need for some people to broadcast themselves is unbelievable.
It's truly ruining genuine social interaction.
I'm not bitter...Just ...Sick of Facebook.
Oh, and WTF is with CNN having segments where they 'interact' with facebook users. How is that news? How is that relavent?

The only reason I have one is for Cmyden's travel deals - and I just get the email about the facebook message with the message in it, so I don't need to even log in.
I think I check facebook 1x/month, if that.

I hate the necessity of Facebook. I was missing out on social gatherings as a result of not having it, but it still is a really annoying application.

The first thing you should do is drop whoever used the phrase "committing social suicide". You don't want anything to do with that person.

I remember my life before I had facebook, and I figure it'd be about the same as it was then if I were to delete my account. True, I won't know that a girl I went to university with is sore from bootcamp today, or that a guy I used to work with had crepes for breakfast in Montreal, but that kind of information doesn't really have much of an effect on my day-to-day life.

Someone removed me as a friend the other day, and I spent like an hour trying to figure it out.
That's when I realized I might be putting too much time into it. I swear, it's the internet's version of crack cocaine.
Unfortunately I can't delete my account or stop using it because it keeps me in touch with my friends overseas, not to mention my thesis is on social media strategy and it would be hypocritical to do so.

Yep.
I use it to keep up with school acquaintances/work colleagues, etc.
Basically people that I have few/some day-to-day interactions with. I have good friends on there, but facebook is really for acquaintances and helping you to use it as some kind of social network, that will help you in some situations(looking for a job, which party to go to, etc)
For my advice is to not delete it, even if you dont use it anymore. It could be somewhat useful in the future and its fun to keep up with some people from time to time.
(and yes, I'll admit it, I use facebook half of the time to intensively check up at pics of hot girls i have as facebook friends. Facebook = socially approved stalking or a clean way to put a peephole in the cheerleaders dressing room )

I like it to keep up with people from my past, and family. But for people I may know on a more day to day basis.. I don't care for them to see what i'm doing on a day to day basis.
for example, "is Going to Yotes WhiteOut!"
Question from random person: What section are you in?
Do I really care to meet up with you at the game? Not really. I just want to watch a hockey game. So I ignore it. lol

I have two accounts. One for my family, and one for my friends. I did that because one of my friends got a little bit annoyed with my cousin over a comment he put on my status update. So, I figured I'd have two seperate accounts to make it easier.
I've thought about deleting Facebook but at the very most, I'd probably just deactivate, then reopen it the next day.
Oh, another funny thing is when you update your status, and someone comments on it four or five minutes later. I'll go and reply to their comment a few hours later, and they'll reply all mad that it took me that long to reply to their comment. Ummmmm....it's probably 'cause I have a life away from Facebook, lol.

5 minutes a day, if that. i log in to check any event invitations or messages sent to me. i really only use it as a different version of email, since unfortunately it seems to be the only way to keep in touch with a few members of my family

I check it pretty regularly throughout the day...depending on how busy I am. If I've got lots of time to kill, then I'll check it pretty often.
I think it's a pretty good tool to use to set up events and stuff. Way easier to do that then try and call everyone. Then that way you can get a good discussion going in regards to changes in plans, etc.
It doesn't take much away from my life (other than productivity). My mother keeps pestering me to make her an account, but I've just said no. If she wants one, she can make it herself. I've just put the few people I don't want all up in my book on a severely limited profile.

I still like facebook, but I had a recent "social cleansing" and went through my list of "friends" and deleted a bunch. The friend collecting is the worst part of facebook. I have moved around alot in my life and have met many great people, and have met many (what I call) fringe people. They were great at the time but I wouldn't pick up the phone to call them now so...... I am using facebook much more purely now and love it to keep up with the people that I actually, genuinely care about.

Facebook is an address book as far as I'm concerned. It's great to have a way to get in touch with people outside Calgary and to organize events. I don't really care for it otherwise. Frankly, I think some things about it are a bit creepy.
I'd say I use it for probably 5-10 minutes per week.

Anyone who can't be bothered to pick up the phone or send an email, preferring only to invite people to events via facebook is someone far too shallow for me to bother with.

How is someone creating an event on Facebook more shallow then a person who sends out an email invitation?

People assume that they've covered all their bases when they add an event to facebook because they (wrongly) assume everyone has facebook. 95% of people do.

That's pretty elitist man...I don't know anybody who wouldn't appreciate just receiving a facebook notice unless it was a super fancy special gig.

I deleted my account at the beginning of September, I used to go one quite frequently and was connected with a lot of friends in London and Toronto. I found though that the only people I really cared about keeping in touch with I did via email/text/phone calls anyway and facebook is just a pain. I hate knowing that facebook owns my information and photos and I honestly can say I haven't missed it at all.
If people don't want to invite me to an event because I'm not on facebook and its not convenient enough to call or text me well screw 'em I don't want to go anyway then.
