Last night I got a 40$ ticket for parking in visitor parking of a condo complex with 8 free stalls from 2:00-3:00 a.m.
This is ridiculous

That sign says nothing about not obstructing your plate with a piece of paper or something. I suggest everyone start doing that now, and see them change the law. It seems as though they'll get as draconian as they have to to collect more scratch.

i think what bothers people isnt the rule its the enforcement and the laziness of the rule. sure, its easily avoided, but when does this endless list of rules end? perhaps the next law they should make up is no farting downtown. easy enough to abide by, just dont eat chili at wendys and hold your farts in. its your fault if you fart, after all. how hard is it to no fart? jeez.

I've been parking at park n ride lots for months. Occasionally, there would be slips of paper under people's windshield wipers that back into the stalls. I grabbed one of these and read it, and it said "As of **** (date), backing into stalls will be illegal. You will receive a ticket for backing into a parking stall."
There was fair warning for the people who park in them on a regular basis.
I agree though, if you don't park there often, there's no way you could know unless you read the sign very carefully. The city should make it more clear.

Much easier to back in and pull out head first later. I remember Schlumberger had a rule that their company vehicles HAD to be parked in reverse for just such reasons. Easier because you saw the parking lot as you approached the spot and know exactly what's going on. Plus it's alot easier to back in with mirrors than it is to back out, when the obstacles are stationary vs. moving.
Or God forbid somebody wants to park in reverse because he knows that when he comes back to his vehicle after a full day of minus 15, his back side windows take forever to defrost, while his windshield and front side windows only take a couple minutes, therefore making a back-in a preferable way to park, since he can see through all his windows upon arrival, but only the front three and the back window upon departure.

I can follow simple rules, so I'm just fine in that regard.

I can not wait until it snows 10 cm one day this winter when people's cars are parked while they are at work.
Are they expected to take the train back at lunch to clear snow off their legally parked cars or do the lazy fatas not work when it's snowing.

They'll probably outfit the parking control cars with a robotic hand that brushes the snow off your plate so the camera can see it.

This is completely different. I'll guarantee you nobody, will be charged for getting a ticket due to snow being on their plates. This is something we can't prevent. If you can't read a sign that says "no backing into stalls" get the fata off the round

Well, I don't use the CT parking lots because I use another craptastic Calgary Transit service. The newly rerouted "Express" bus.
I will get off the round though.

Sure. You have to drive past the parking spot, then put it into reverse to back in. I don't like being the guy stuck behind some a hole doing this. Secondly, the average driver can't back in straight so they'll make parking more difficult for the next people. Lastly, it seems self important to me. Maybe it isn't, but I don't care. I've made up my mind on this one.

While I do agree that the amount of the fine sucks I can't say I feel particularly sorry for those who receive it. People these days are far too unaware of their surroundings and take too much for granted. How many people get a speeding ticket because they missed the speed limit sign from 100 to 80? Seems kinda like the same principle to me. Life's tough. Wear a helmet. $40 fine? Lesson learned.

No kidding. I hate when people just crap on others for rules when they don't know the reasoning. Do people think the rules exists for no reason whatsoever? Do they think city employees just sit in a room and brainstorm how they can screw people over? I'm an elected official in an Alberta city that is not Calgary and once got a call from a friend who complained because he got a ticket for parking a foot outside a parking area. Well, the parking area is there for a reason. There was a fire hydrant or a crosswalk or something that he parked too close to. But it's only a foot, he said. Doesn't matter; pay the ticket.
