Again, the addicition to sugar is probably the result of consuming too many processed foods. HFCS for instance is in pretty much everything and it does not allow your body to recognize when it is full, and causes your brain to release endorphins which is likely the response that is causing cravings and feelings of "addiction".
|
Well, if you have to pick between eating a bunch of refined sugars and drinking diet-pop, which would you go with?
I'm not suggesting that he should just switch and consume 15-20 of them a day. Just switch and start weaning himself off of the ACTUAL sugar.

Bananas and blueberries are pretty much the greatest fruits ever invented. Like I always say, anyone who tells you that bananas make you fat is a dirty pinko.

I usually eat blueberries in a bowl of ice cold skim milk... delicious.

Since I'm in University the only thing that keeps my weight in check is working out... other than that I eat like crap.

This is wrong. I'd say about a good 45% of my daily diet is fat. It's carbs that put on weight/fat if you don't work enough.
I kind of hit a peak with burning fat a few weeks ago, so I switched my diet to be heavier in fats and proteins, lower in carbs. The results were pretty imediate.

I usually throw 'em in with my lunch protein shake. I hate making a complex lunch because I hate lunch food, so I just make a protein shake with fruit and that tides me over until my mid-afternoon snack.

I've been following 4 simple rules for approximately 5 weeks and am down almost 20 pounds.
1) Completely cut out sugar drinks (including Coke.. my weakness), fast food and watch my sugar.
2) Work out daily. 25-45 minutes hard cardio. Bike, swim or run
3) If my grandmother wouldn't understand the ingredients of a product on a grocery store shelf, don't eat it.

I'd rather have the sugar. Not a big fan of aspartame.

Also, if you like cheese, Brie is awesome. 1.3:1 ratio (fat to protein).

Yep.
I'm popping close to 20 per day right now.
Beginning to actually wonder if the missing link in our diet all these years has been Omega3s.

Interested to get some opinions about multi-vitamins. My doctor says they are useless as long as I am eating right. Living in Saskatchewn he says the main thing I have to worry about is Vitamin D supplement, and possibly a Calcium supplement if I don't drink enough milk.. which I do, I am a milk nut.
But then I have had trainers tell me, and read on the internet, that the base to any good diet is a solid multi-vitamin.
Thoughts? Is a multi-vitamin more of a way to fill up the already full cup? Or is it just topping everything off to make sure it is well rounded enough? I find that my urine is bright yellow the days I take multi vitamins, usually a sign that I am peeing it all away?
That is the standard size I want for fish oil pills? 1000 mg?

I'm going to respond to some people posts earlier when I have a chance (I'm at work), but in terms of multi-vitamins... I started taking them a couple months ago. One pill in the morning. I figure I probably don't need all them in there as I get a healthy amount already per day in my food, but it also helps fill in the gaps where you don't get any / enough of those vitamins if you miss them while eating. While they don't give you energy, they definitely give you the building blocks for it. I've found I'm less 'groggy' in the day when I have enough vitamins and minerals.

20 per day? Is that standard? Seems like a lot wouldn't be absorbed.
With regards to the sugar cravings, I actually don't drink a lot of pop. It's more that I crave sweets almost on a daily basis.

I hear what you're saying. Obviously the preference is none of the above, but when faced with the choice I personally drink regular pop vs the diet alternative. Those synthesized sweeteners not only screw with your hormones, they are also carcinogens. Not that regular pop is free of risk - the coatings used inside cans can also leach BPA and similar endocrine disruptors.
Soda is just as evil as cigarettes. Which is better regular or "lite"? Seriously, they both suck.
