Well there's also the fact that a lot of pop music is manufactured and mass marketed as a product that people will buy. So are the corporations shaping people's tastes, or are the people simply forcing the industry to churn out more of what they want?

Mix of both really, one feeds the other and eventually, 95% of the music sounds the same. But if you look back even to different music eras (not just rock, but even to the romantic era, classical etc) a lot of the things that sounded musically aesthetic to the ear and similar things that the music industry targets now.

Its music, but its also a business. Hard to argue with the dollar figures.

My point is that I understand that people have opinion that may not match mine, it's the comments that knock people who don't share the same opinion.

Maybe I'm being "over sensitive", but I don't add the knock on people who don't line up with my style.

If you didn't like the performance, post that. But don't knock me for enjoying it.

Thank you. I've personally never understood how people can say whatever music they like to listen to is good, and other things are crap. Really, it's all relative opinion. Music should be something that is enjoyable to hear, and the proof is in the fact that millions of people like listening to these types of music. You or I might not like it, but that doesn't mean it's bad music.

i never understand music snobs .... first it defies logic to say "they" suck" ... for example Timberlake, Spears and in this case Lady Gaga.

how can they "suck" and yet sell millions of dollars in merchandise related to their music? clearly they dont suck or nothing would sell.

seriously, i am extremely good looking and hung like a horse (lol) (right?, RIGHT?), but i cant hold a tune to save my life. no one is "marketing" my music because i most assuradly do suck as a singer.

to me, lets agree they may not be the most technically gifted, it takes immeasurale talent, charisma and balls to be able to translate medium singing skills into a huge music career.

i think its jealousy to critisize these entertainers.

You aren't saying they suck compared to a mechanical engineer or something. You are comparing them to others in the field of music that you like when you say they suck. Its like saying Luongo sucks. I'm not comparing him to the fat guy who works at McDonald's, i'm saying it relative to the NHL and because of the fact that I don't like him or the team he plays for. Should we spare sports stars the scrutiny of saying they suck too? After all, it takes elite talent to make the NHL. Like I said before..oversensitive. If you like it fine, but I can still say it sucks.

arent you confusing your personal taste with an evaluation of their talent?

Its often one in the same thing. What other standard is there to judge them by?

how about the fact they are multi national superstars who have sold millions of $'s in music and tour revenues?

how is that possible if they "suck"

in fact, if they do indeed suck, isnt that an even more amazing accomplishment to suck AND to make millions from it..

id bet people who really do suck wouldnt make millions at it.

Here, I'll help you out:

Correct: "I don't like Lady Gaga's Music."
Incorrect: "Lada Gaga sucks at what she does."

I assume that was at me.

No I didn't expect Beethoven's 5th, but reading this comment

But then part way through the performance, she stops, walks to a piano on stage and starts playing.

Suffice to say I saw floored. 4 mins after that she just sat there singing and playing on a piano, and it was just completely captivating!
prior to watching the video, I did expect to hear something of a higher caliber than a elementary school piano recital (this gross exaggeration is in response to your Beethoven comment).

Mass media mind control is what is really controlling what is popular. There is very little that is tolerable to me nowadays that gets airtime on MuchMusic or Radio in general.

CD sales numbers/$ from sales has no correlation to musical talent.

If this clip is supposed to be showcasing her talent, then she is just average, maybe even slightly below average talent-wise than most people who play clubs. Only reason she is famous and these people aren't is marketing. Only reason she is marketed is that she is obviously willing to whore herself out*, as well as being in the right place at the right time. (*by that I mean do all the outrageous stuff to get attention)

I won't say she sucks, as that seems to be a wrong thing to do according to some posts, but I will say I prefer punching myself in the junk repeatedly to listening to anything I've heard coming from this person.

I still have no idea what she is saying. I do think she is talented, and some of her music is actually quite catchy, but I equate her music to some of the jpop I've heard in the past...no idea what they are saying, but catchy none the less.
