You usually either get a choice of manual gear box, or flappy paddle shifters.

I'm surprised so many people from Calgary are choosing manual, considering the traffic.

I choose auto. I seem to get a lot of phone calls when I'm on the road and so having an automatic transmission is a lot more convenient (And no, I don't have a headset. If anyone's thinking about preaching to me, just don't. Don't waste the bandwidth).

One of our work trucks is manual, and while it is fun to drive, it's horrible when the boss starts calling me in traffic. Nothing makes me lose my temper quite like having the phone ring while I'm driving a standard in traffic.

Manual no question. My very first car i bought on my own when i was 18 for 1k (pos pontiac acadian) i taught myself how to drive manual on that thing, then proceeded to teach 4x4 how to drive manual on that thing, i've never owned an automatic since then and it's been 15 years.
I can't even think of a situation in which i would consider buying an automatic ever again.
As for talking on the phone, get a headset, or get a car that you can pair your phone with so that the hands free comes thru the stereo like my car.
Although, i will say before i got this car with the handsfree in the stereo, i did master the art of eating while driving etc...
Still..manual all the way. IMO of course.

I find it amusing that so many people in this thread reference the horrible traffic in Calgary. Coming from a bigger city, I always though it was pretty light, and always enjoy the chance to drive in the relative free lanes of Calgary whenever I am home for the holidays. I guess it's all about perspective.

I wonder if it has anything to do with age. Ask me 10 years ago and I would have said manual.

It would be interesting to see the correlation of age to car preference.

I prefer an automatic in the mornings, and manual in the evenings. I am just way too damn tired to really think about anything in the mornings. Even if it really isn't thinking... it's still thinking!

Manual for sure, especially if it's a nice car. Nothing comes close to the sound or the feel of a high performance engine with a 5 or 6 speed transmission.

Every car I had ever owned up until very recently was a manual. Unfortunately, the wife decided she wanted an SUV and the one she picked only comes in automatic. CURSES!!

One of my first cars was an Austin Healey 3000 sports car. It had a manual transmission of course, but it was so bad it didn't seem to be syncronized going into any gear, so I had to double clutch every time. After a while I did it automatically, I loved that car.

My motorcycle tranny is so good I can change gears without using the clutch most of the time, still in stop and go traffic, on a hot day, with me wearing full gear, my left hand gets a workout I can do without, it's a PITA too, as well as other places.

In downtown heavy traffic an automatic is sweet, especially if you can do left foot braking for great control but for the open road, I like a manual.

This thread is neat to watch - if you read all the comments, you would think on the surface that 80% of CP'ers drive standard.
