Nah. It's Off Topic. It's not Flames or NHL news, so it's in the OTF. Until the PCs and the Libs and the NDP start really adding to the pollution of the OTF, we don't need a new forum for stuff like this.
I'd love to hear from some of the other parties here on CP. Agree or disagree, at least FL has the balls to show her face around here and say what she's got to say.

Truth be told, I would like to spend more time here; but reality is we are too friggin busy right now. 'course having my arm in cast isnt' helping matters either.
I know I was a pain in the a$$ to the mods when I first got here. I have had threads locked, deleted and I've even been banned.
Because of that, I have been very selective of what I post here and those who follow either of my blogs know; there is a ton more stuff I could be posting.
There has been a great deal of talk about the WAP in the general public since our by-election win; which truly was a historical day. Delivering a significant blow to the PC's.
Many say our leader will become the next Premier; if not in 2012 (13) election or certainly by the next one (2016?). I would have posted this even if I was not directly involved in the party and I hope (or at least like to think) others would have as well.
The way I see it, the forums where I post get an inside track on what is happening; often hearing about things before the media catch wind of it.

First Lady breaks arm doing self-check for balls.... nice headline!
I am glad the videos were posted. Can't find the ones where Stephane Dion was replaced as leader of his party. Anyone?

That was a national convention that took place in Vancouver in May. I'm sure that coverage was all through the papers and usual national media outlets.
I don't think that the question here is whether anyone wants to see this...apparently quite a few of us have 2 hours to listen to the rhetoric. The question is whether we need a thread every week to report the latest happenings. I didn't do a search, but I know that there was one about the latest polling information and them gaining momentum or something, then we have the race that is down to two....then we have what ever the thread was called wherein Hinman won, and I'm sure that there have been dozens of others. It usually ends with a few of us arguing though (about the same old things over and over!), so it is what it is.

How many US Politics / Obama / US Healthcare / War in Iraq threads have there been.
None of them hold the same actual importance to Alberta based users than a new party with a chance. If they blow the next election and fail to increase their seat count then they will die off like countless parties before them. If any party - the Libs or NDP or Green Party or Alberta Communist party or whatever want to post a link to their leadership debate so be it. The last time I checked if there is interest in the topic it stays on the front page, if not it dies into the CP archives.
Also, I dont consider this advertising - this is a new thread about a different issue than a by-election thread. If she blank posted a thread to keep it on the main page (like some sellers to in the Buy/Sell forum), then yes, that is over the line IMO. Or if she had a thread everytime that party came out with a new policy announcement or platform change, that would be advertising.

I actually don't think that a single one of these has stayed on topic, including this thread here.

If you are going to call me a liar you better have something better to spew than that.
That "quote" was about threads in general and not about WRA threads or whatever you meant by quoting that and calling me a liar. I intended to post my opinion being debated off topic in this thread and be done with it.
But a Liberal then posted and called me a Liar.
(Why do liberals throw out useless accusations with no thought behind them (I dont need a bs smilie or 4 exclamation marks to get my point across).
Oh yah, it was a left wing poster calling this advertising that put this thread off topic.

That is another thing.
A lot of the threads about the WRA or Alberta politics in general generate a lot of discussion.
And not necessarily by First Lady or Firefly either.
Far as I'm concerned, its almost the work of sheer genius for First Lady to have come here 2 years ago and join the community then. She generated discussion, generated interest, and helped people figure out what the WRA was all about. Now, when you go search Google for certain information about the WRA, you get CP hits. And people who do that will read actual discussions rather than rhetoric that the party has on their site.
Would I be so excited about the possibility of a Danielle Smith led WRA party here in Alberta if it weren't for any of that? Probably not.
I also still maintain that some of the people complaining about this are only doing so because they can't stand the popularity the WRA is receiving. For the simple reason that those people were nowhere to be found 2 years ago when First Lady first joined the place. Now, suddenly with the whole province talking about the by-election win, its a problem that she's here?
Right.

Says the dirty liberal diehard.
I don't know if people remember, but years ago we never got this broad of a response from different posters when it came to political threads. It used to be the same people over and over again.
Me, Lanny, Rouge, Tranny, DFF, Cowperson, IFF and a couple others.
Now, as CP has grown, we've gained a lot more posters who also get involved in the political threads, and it results in a message board with a broader, more diverse opinion.
If we can attract someone from the Liberal Party, someone from the Green Party, someone from the PC Party, etc, etc.....it only helps to broaden outlook.
In fact, the Liberals would actually be smart to sign up here and get involved in the political threads. I wouldn't think of them as being idiots so much if they would.

I would prefer all the WAP PR information in one thread; I don't see that there is enough differentiation in the information we get that warrants new threads. That people continually go rehash the topics of old threads is not the point; that is usually different people bringing up the same subject, and that is much harder to control.
Note that I am talking only about things like this video that are already available to interested parties, and could be considered public relations information; threads about political issues in Alberta are perfectly appropriate and I don't think anyone has an issue with that. I also would like some of the representatives of other parties to post here, and give us their thoughts on some of the issues, and I do appreciate that First Lady is here and does give us insight into the WAP, but if every party had someone come here and started posting links to videos and policy sheets on their websites, it would quickly degenerate into a spamfest.
Then again, I'm a crypto-anarchosocialist, so my motives in saying all this are beyond suspect and into the terrain of incomprehensibly evil.

Really? I didn't see that one. I saw one started by someone (other than FF or I) to slag Hinman with the same false accusations the Liberals were throwing at him. In that thread FireFly and I only posted one comment each; yet it went on for 6 pages
You managed to find time to post at least twice on each of those 6 pages.

Well there is your solution, take a look in the mirror and see who is keeping the threads active. Perhaps stick to more important things like whether you poo at work or examine your poops and these political threads will die quicker.
And when I say "you" I mean the universal sense; not you specificallly. I am sure there are others who posted multiple times in the threads as well.

I bet none of your support the WRA, which would explain why you have a problem with it.
One thing you should also remember, CP is the largest online community for people to discuss things in Alberta. It would frickin' make sense to be a part of that, don't you think?
First Lady and Firefly have only ever defended their viewpoint or make it easier for us to read about their policies. Considering that a big part of the advertising is done online these days, you guys sound like a bunch of Liberal whiners for having a problem with a party that you don't support actually taking advantage of that and being ahead of the game by joining CP.
|
I was with you up until the Liberal whiners bit. It's a bit hypocritcal to take a pot-shot at another party when you're advocating fair and open non-partisan discussion, don't you think?

I would like the party to decide on its abbreviation. Will it be WRA or WAP going forward?
I think all political discussion is good. It certainly helps invests us all as citizens of Alberta and Canada.
The one off-putting thing for me that decreases my participation is the regular name-calling or dismissing of opinions because someone may be of a different mindset or political affiliation. I'd like to think we're a bit more civilized than some of those discussing USA politics on other message boards I've seen.

You've obviously confused my finding the time to post as deeming the thread worthy or necessary. Frankly you and FF should both Azure and myself (and IFF) for keeping these things on the first page!

I don't have a problem with WAP content on the board; it's something that people have expressed interest in and has often generated good discussion when posted. The fact that members of the party are posting it shouldn't make it less valid.
Although I'm definitely in the camp that starting a new thread should always be a last resort, and if there's any existing thread that even remotely fits, new content should go in there. I think this is especially true of politics, which may not be everyone's cup of tea. I like that pretty much every federal politics story and discussion about it has been posted in the 'Liberals will move to topple Conservative Government' thread; it's an effective (if unintentional) catch-all, and anyone who's interested in federal politics will probably check the thread when they see it bumped back to the front page. The 'recommend a movie', 'interesting science news' and 'upcoming album releases' threads are also examples of very effective catch-all threads. It would be useful to have a similar provincial politics thread.

This could have gone into the leadership thread, and perhaps should have been (and still could be) merged. Overall though it's no biggie, really.
Given their by-election win, and the interest that has generated in the party right now, the WAP is a topical discussion point right now. In a couple weeks a new leader will be elected, we'll debate that, and then like most political topics, the discussion will fade until the next election cycle.
The irony of this is that this thread is only still on the front page because people chose to complain about it's existence. If not for that, it's already on the 2nd or 3rd page, and forgotten. A nice little small-scale example of the Streisand Effect at work.
