Man's lung ailment caused by fragment of fast food spoon
Quote:
(CNN) -- "I know I didn't chow down on a spoon!" declared John Manley, who recently discovered that an eating utensil was the source of his two years of ill health, coughing, vomiting and pain.
The Wilmington, North Carolina, resident had surgery last week to remove part of a plastic spoon from his lung. And it wasn't just any old plastic spoon; it came from the fast-food chain Wendy's, with the restaurant logo clearly visible on the handle.
"It must have been in the food or drink," Manley told CNN affiliate WECT.
His doctor found the spoon after looking into his lungs with an endoscope, a medical instrument with a long, thin tube containing a light and a video camera.
"He explained that there was an object down there, and it had writing on it," Manley said. "It spelled out 'Wendy's' on one side and 'hamburgers' on the other, and I was a little floored."
So were his relatives, who, when they were telephoned with the news, were eating ... Wendy's.

It just seems so odd for the reason you mentioned ... I imagine anything in your lungs would cause intense discomfort let alone a piece of plastic. I don't think I understand the biology of the lungs enough to even understand how this could happen in the first place.

I smell scam. Remember that lady who blended razor blades and put it in her McDonalds and ate it claiming that it was in the food so she could sue McD's?
How the hell do you inhale a part of a spoon. Crazier things have happened, though.

Is there anyway he could sue wendys for not making its plastic spoons pig proof.
I really hope they cannot be held responsible for someone inhaling their food like its at a trough.

It was in there for two years though. That's a hell of a commitment if it was a scam.

Bigger question is why did it take doctors 2 years to find it.

Plastic won't show up on an X-ray, and something tells me this isnt the kind of guy who cares much about his health, let alone gets a yearly checkup.

I enjoy fast food from time to time and still have my regular checkups with my GP. I think you're painting with a wide brush.

Yup; when I see a history of "inhaling fast food" + "American", I think fat, unhealthy American. And you know what? I'm statistically right >50% of the time.

Why blame the victim? Perhaps Wendy's shouldn't have broken pieces of spoon in their soft drinks.

Right, because the likely cause was that Wendys broke off a piece of spoon in their drink or food and then sold it to this guy. Because Wendys as well all know tries to kill its customers with plastic spoon pieces and just loves to have US litigation suits brought upon them for negligence.
You blame Wendys.
I am going to blame the fatty.
Quick poll: How many people have found pieces of spoon inside their drink cup.
As a quick test of Canadian Wendy policies on the weekend I got myself a combo with a frosty. I didnt find a piece of spoon inside my frosty. What I did find was a delicious unhealthy ice cream substance. It was very tasty. Oh yah, the spoon was in the bag in a plastic wrapper FYI.
What classic BS - some fat pig inhales his food and spoon then sues Wendys and wins. How did he prove that it was Wendys who put the piece of spoon in the food and not he who broke a piece of the spoon off then accidently inhaled it. What a court system they have in the US - its true, Justice is blind.
The Culture on this continent of not taking responsibility for your actions is sickening.

It was the handle of the spoon. I don't think anyone could accidently break off the part of the spoon that you hold in your hand and accidently eat it, fat pig or not. I can't even imagine how that could possibly happen.
On the other hand, its pretty easy to imagine some 14 year old employees playing around with plastic spoons in the back. Spoon ending up in the drink/food during prep somehow seems way more likely.

What is this fat barstard doing with food / spoons in his lungs? Usually when I eat, the goal is for the food to make it to my stomach, not my lungs.

I clicked the link and there's no picture of the guy. How does everyone know he's overweight? I'm normal weight (well, according to the nintendo wii, I'm 20 lbs overweight, but I think that 200lbs on a guy 6'2" is just fine), but I eat my share of fast food. And sometimes I eat it really fast. So why is this guy being called fatty again? (I'll eat my words if there is a pic and he is indeed fat)

Do you have any proof he's a fat barstard?
Links of his picture would help

If you look at the size of the spoon fragment, it is obvious he is fat. If a skinny person were going to inhale some spoon, they would obviously inhale a much smaller portion.
EDIT: Looking at this picture more, is anyone calling BS on this guys story? How the hell does a piece of plastic that size enter your mouth without you noticing? What did he say, "Wow this frosty is really crunchy, OK big guy deep breath!"
