Trespassing on your property, get a samurai sword, you know what to do with it.
Edit: Beaten to the punch... damn!

Shoot, shovel and shut up. It's the Alberta way.
Or string a piece of strong, fine wire across their pathway at about neck level. And put some broken beer bottles in your rock beds.

Regulator has the right idea... put up a couple of beware of dog signs.
Also put up an electrified fence sign... especially if it's a wood fence |

Outside of confronting them in hopes that they are the same people every time or discussing the matter with your landlord for a possible solution, I don't know what else you can do.
Any self help methods that may cause harm to potential trespassers would probably land you in a heap of trouble. Additionally, any modifications you make to the property might be frowned upon by your landlord.

If they're passing through in the dark, I would seriously do the wire thing, except probably shin level to trip them up. I think it'd be hilarious.

I'd do the tripwire, especially if you c an rig up a light and video camera.
Or you could take your concerns to the landlord. But he'll probably just put up a tripwire.
