Do you have a guess as to where you think you got it? Do you recall someone coughing all over you at the grocery store or something similarly germy and gross, or did it just sneak up out of the blue?

Started Friday....ignored it until i couldn't any longer on Saturday. Took a quick trip to the clinic, doctor suspected, did the test and they just called. Funny thng is today is the best i have felt since Saturday, but have to stay in the house til at least Thursday at this point. Just waiting for the blond to start showing symptoms now. Oh joy.

It's definitely the time of year when you should refrain from picking your nose after opening the door at 7-11.

Hope you have a strong recovery.

I've heard conflicting views on getting a flu shot. Some people think they're risky. If you had the opportunity to get a FREE shot, would you do it?

Called the doc to find out how long i should expect this crap...he called back and said that it varies from person to person and suggested a scrip for a drug called Relenza if things dont subside by weeks end.
As for where i got it....no idea. i was at Hooters for a couple beers with buddies last Thursday afternoon...so that may of been ground zero for me. I was also at a supermarket and a drug store that afternoon...so who knows.

No idea if I had pig flu but a month or so back I felt as bad as I ever have that I can recall. Never really had a fever but severe aches, gut pain along with the other gastro-intestinal issues. If I had it great as it has likely run it's course in our house.

That works out to a 6.2% death rate?

It is worth noting that the H1N1 virus seems to hit native people especially hard. Not only do they seem to pick up the virus more easily but they also are more likely to die once they do.
So in short, if you are not native the fatality rate is significantly lower in Alberta so far.
If you are Native, then I would be very very careful.
That being said, obviously native people (along with men who refuse to ever go to the doctor) are often less likely to seek immediate medical advice when they are first feeling symptoms -- which can further increase your chances of dying.
If your lungs are already half full by the time you get to the hospital you are in a lot of trouble no matter what they do for you.

In a lot of ways it is good to get it out of the way if it is going to be widespread.... build up the immunity early in case it mutates into a deadlier form.
|
If it mutates, doesn't that generally mean the defense you built up is useless?

Not necessarily. It is the same basic virus, just with small changes to it that may make it more or less deadly. In fact, it is thought that people exposed to an H1N1 strain that went around in the early 70s will allready be immune to this.
Also, those that lived through the 1919 spanish flu may also have an immunity to it.

Is anyone still alive from 1919 even? I guess some 90+ year olds are still kicking around but probably not many.
Ugh. I'm trying not to buy into the hype/propaganda but I really don't want my kid to get this so I personally find it a bit scary.

Far less than that. You have to assume a large number of unconfirmed/unreported cases.
