That being said, I am a polite smoker, I won't smoke when kids are around and follow the 15 foot from a doorway law we have here now.

You know if you quit you would have money to buy real beer instead of that light stuff you're downing tonight.

True, but if I quit smoking I'd have to murder at least 12 people at my job, and then I'm in jail and not spending money on booze or smokes.
I understand that non smokers don't like us. I get it, really. It makes sense. Hell, I love that the bars here are non smoking now. Getting home after a night out and not smelling like a hooker's ashtray is nice.
In the same vein, it's still legal, and always will be. For those of us that follow the rules, walk out into the snow the smoke at work, and basically don't flaunt it in the face of non smokers, how about some of you back off eh? Just freaking relax ya tightarses.

I am so surprised that the argument comparing smoking to fatties isn't in full force.

You know what ticks me off even more? People who puff second-hand smoke right into your face on a windy day when you're waiting at a bus stop or just walking.

Why don't we just make it illegal for everyone under the age of ten to ever buy cigarettes? It is a huge drain on our health care system. The problem is that the big tobacco companies control who gets elected into public office by way of campaign contributions.

I've mostly just lurked through this thread, but as a non-smoker:
So long as you aren't doing it in my car, home, or the salon where I work (the previous owner allowed it, took a year to get rid of the smell.)...live and let live.
The only time I think less of a person for smoking is when it's someone like various extended family of mine, who are on welfare and can barely afford to buy food (and regularly have to borrow money for that) and yet they always have money for cigarettes. My sister once took money from her son's piggy bank to buy a pack.
If you've got the disposable income, go for it. We all have our vices.

Is this an observation, or a confession?

You just described every single client I have. It's not that they don't want to quit...some just can't at this moment in time. A lot suffer from institutionalization and this is the one thing that they for most of their lives, had control of. It relieves stress for some people. Many people have concurrent disorders and smoking helps them throughout the day (mentally, not physically lol).
Some people can't mentally process how to spend their money wisely and will just spend it on what gives them pleasure (sometimes they have very few pleasures in life). Would it be a better world if they didn't smoke...yes for them and us, but people who smoke are not evil lol.
Anywho my soapbox is getting wobbly and I am heading out for the night...smoke em if ya got em!!!

Can you believe people used to smoke on airplanes? And at the office?
I'll feel sorry for smokers in 2012, when I figure the years I had to put up with their disgusting, vomit-inducing smoke has about evened out with the years they've had to put up with being seen as pariahs and ne'er-do-wells. Until then - UNCLEAN! UNCLEAN! 'WARE THE DEVIL'S SPAWN - THE SMOKER!
