They seem to talk about Texeira being a candidate before anyone else on the Yankees roster, but I think Jeter has had a more MVP like season. Will it hurt him that he is batting lead-off and has just 60 or so RBIs?

Romero had a great shot at AL ROY at one point....probably not anymore.

I HATE Jeter, and would be the happiest guy in the world if he got shafted. This year his AVG has been solid, but IMO, he's been one of the most overrated players in the game for years. This year, I'll admit he does deserve a look, but hopefully the guy doesn't win. This is a bit of a homer statement, but Aaron Hill has been great this year too. Not as great an average, but solid nonetheless...especially on this Jays team who probably don't get that many people on base, he's had a ton of RBI's and will probably hit 100 once the season is done. I'd be more than happy if he was at least considered.

Jeter will likely get some consideration but a guy like Jason Bartlett as a SS has put up pretty comparable numbers. Given the rest of the Rays lineup I'd argue Bartlett has been as valuable or more valuable to the Rays than Jeter to the Yankess. Although if you compare the Yankees man to man with the Red Sox, the one position where the Yankess hold a huge edge is at short stop with Jeter. So that should say something about Jeters value to the Yankees.
Mauers numbers are just outstanding though leading the league in on base and slugging playing primarily as a catcher. Plus a 600+ slugger on pace to strike out like 65 times is unreal. It's one of the best seasons ever for a MLB catcher, that it will be hard not to give him the MVP.

Attitude mostly. Typical professional athlete. Leadership has always been overrated primarily because he's a Yankee. Defence he's average, offensively he hasn't had huge power numbers either. Average wise the guy has always been solid, but the Yanks have always been a successful team which is why he gets so many accolades, and I've never liked the guy because of being overrated. We were seeing the same thing with Joba until his recent off-field troubles.
As for Mauer, his numbers are huge, and personally I don't care if the Twins never made the playoffs, but he's done absolutely amazing this year. Baseball's more of a team sport so it's really hard to discount a guy because his team never made the playoffs (I'd argue that it's almost impossible in baseball for a guy to carry the team). Mauer would be my choice for MVP.

Pretty much everyone who has dealt with him has said differently. He isn't the typical athlete and is a great community guy who is great with young fans.
Also, many players who played with him said he was a great leader.
I guess if you think leadership is overrated in general then I understand but not sure why Jeter's leadership in particular would be in question.
He is a great player who has played for great teams. He plays well when it counts and seems to come up big when his team needs him. He may not be an all-time great but he certainly is one of the top players of his era and deserving of every accolade that he gets.

I'm just reading Joe torre's Yankee Years book and he agrees with you, moon. Apparently leadership by example guy, but would also speak up when things needed to be said. Torre also used his as a messanger as well - i.e. something needed to be said to a player, but it had to come from a player.
That said, I do think he is over-rated, a result of the whole NY thing. But it almost got to a point where it was in vogue to bash him, which made him almost a bit underrated if you will. But you can't deny, even though I'm not much of a fan, that this year he has made a "come back" of sorts if you will. Apparently he worked hard over the winter on his range.

Jeter is on the cusp of breaking the all time hit record as a Yankee...

Yeah it would have been nice, especially considering I can't watch Friday's game.

Ichiro just hit a fantastic walk off home run against Rivera. I don't think I've ever seen him hit one that far. It means nothing, but it's a nice little feel good moment. This after Mike Sweeny came off the bench to hit a 2 out double to extend the game. I watch the Mariners and the leadership guys like Sweeny and Griffey have given that team and how excited they are. The Blue Jays have nothing like that.

No kidding. The Blue Jays are one of the most boring teams in the league. No personalities and guys like Wells on top of that. Dull, uninspired. LOL they are hard to watch(well after the first month).

Tigers and Twins for four games at Comerica with the Tigers up two games with seven to play (afterwards DET hosts CHW for three, MIN is at KC for three).
Pitching matchups:
Tonight -- Nick Blackburn (11-11, 4.18) vs. Rick Porcello (14-9, 4.14)
Tuesday -- Brian Duensing (5-1, 3.33) vs. Justin Verlander (17-9, 3.41)
Wednesday -- Carl Pavano (13-11, 4.86) vs. Eddie Bonine (0-1, 4.60)
Thursday -- Scott Baker (14-9, 4.48) vs. Nate Robertson (2-2, 5.56)
I believe that, unless the Tigers win both tonight and tomorrow, the Twins will win the division.
---
And I don't know how tv contracts and such work but isn't there any way Sportsnet can turf the Blue Jays contract for the next 3 days and show this? With no hockey, they would make an absolute killing showing this series. Who the heck wants the watch another parade of Blue Jays pitchesr turn around and watch their fastballs get blasted to the moon?

Masochists.
At least one race will have a compelling series with something on the line. I'm glad for that. And for the internet, so I can watch said series.

Yankees gonna take it this year. I say Yankees-Phillies in the final or Yankees-Dodgers. I'd love to see Jeter win the MVP but realistically it will probably go to Joe Mauer. He's playing unbelievably, especially for a catcher.

Twins win game one of the double header today and are now just 1 game back of the Tigers. Maybe the Twins got their run going early enough this year to make that late season charge count for something.
