In 20 years or so fresh water will be the next precious natural resource on earth, just like oil is right now. Fresh water is a renewable ressource, yet the world's supply of clean, fresh water is steadily decreasing. We can suppose that the southern states and possibly California will need potable water in order to fill the needs of their respective populations.

Canada possesses 1/4 or more of the fresh/potable water existing on Earth. Quebec alone has countless sources of fresh water useful or potentially useful for humans. The U.S will need it soon and knowing that their neighbours up north have it, I think it would create a conflict between both countries.

Going by the way most people are responding, Canada would be the easiest country to occupy on Earth.

If the US invaded, it would be a pretty short skirmish, unless we enlisted the aid of another foreign country and the only foreign countries that would be of any use are pretty bad alternatives to being an occupied American state.

If a foriegn power other than one that we consider friendly invaded, I think the response would be different.

wouldn't any attack on Canada be an attack on the commonwealth, and wouldn't Britain be required to respond?

I doubt that the British Navy would be able to run the gauntlet of American carrier battle groups and submarines.

It would be more likely that the Russian's would intervene both to gain the resources in the Arctic and Western Canada and to gain a strategic foothold in North America, and they would have a much easier route for their bombers and troops over the arctic and through Alaska.

If you ever want to see a true nuclear scenario, an invasion of Canada would probably trigger it.

And . . . if the Russians did come to our "aid" they would never leave, we would become a garrison state .

Anyone who thinks that an American invasion of Canada would be easy is fooling themselves. In a lot of ways Canada is a lot like Afghanistan, lots of wide open spaces for mine fields, lots of choke points in the mountain regions, and the key strategy to defend this nation is the same as the Russians used in the second world war, try to kill as many American's as possible while denying them access to resources. That means blowing pipelines, irradiating mines and fields.

Personally if I was wargaming this, beyond the resource destruction and mining open areas, I would place mass artillary on the B.C. border and shell the crap out of Seattle and Portland, personally I would also poison all rivers heading into the states that supply the U.S. with water.

I'm sure the Poles and Czechs who were around in 1939 could tell you the value of a mutual defence pact with Britain.

If the US were smart, they would just invest billions into our tar sands like China and avoid having invade in the future.

Seriously, I'd wait for the inevitable domestic opposition to surface in the US before doing anything. Vietnam as an unpopular war would be nothing compared to this; not only domestically would the American gov't be in trouble, but it would destroy NATO and leave the Americans friendless internationally. I also don't think the American military would go along with such an invasion - you would see mass resignations of the brass, desertions, and even mutiny.

I have faith that the American people would topple their government inside of 3 months and that the status quo antebellum would be re-established. In the meantime, I think that my involvement would be limited to non-violent protest and obstructionism of the occupation, as I think that guerrilla warfare would be counter-productive and unnecessary in the end.

Well Canada is a independent and autonoumous state since the Statute of Westminster and the Constitution of 1982. Thus they do not need the assistance of the United Kingdom for military reasons. Canada is not a dominion under British influence anymore, they are fully independant, both on domestic and foreign affairs.

BTW, Canada is only in the Commonwealth because they were formerly a British dominion/colony. The purpose of the commonwealth is to unite countries who were subject to the once powerful influence of the British Empire. Commonwealth countries share some cultural and political affiliations, like parliamentary democracy and the use of the English language.

I guess for me it wouldn't be a big deal if the US invaded; seeing as we are such similar countries.

Now, if Canada was invaded by another country like Russia or China- and for some reason the Americans decided not to help us; that would be a different story all together.
My thoughts exactly.

Funny because the first thing I was going to type in response to the thread is "sign up for DirecTV" and that is the first thing you said...lol.

Wow OBCT I've never researched dual citizenship but you answered my question as to if it is possible.

After watching "House Hunters" I support the invasion of Canada if it means I can just take over a house on Lake Ontario.

Lake Ontario is a cesspool. Lake Huron is where it's at!

The U.S. drafted up an invasion plan in 1935:

http://www.glasnost.de/hist/usa/1935invasion.html

Quote:
In case of war with the United States, Canadas coal imports from this country would be cut off and her railroads and industrial activities seriously handicapped. If Blue controlled the Quebec area and Winnipeg, Canada's railroads and industries dependent upon "steam power" would be crippled.
Quote:
Nickel is necessary to industry and indispensable in war. Control of the Sudbury mines, in case of war, is therefor of vital importance.
Also - sounds like Alberta is of little concern!

Quote:
Crimson cannot successfully defend her territory against the United States (Blue). She will probably concentrate on the defense of Halifax and the Montreal-Quebec line in order to hold bases of operation for Red.

Important secondary efforts will be made to defend her industrial area and critical points on her transcontinental railroad lines.

8. Areas of Strategic Importance.
Analysis of the above data and discussion indicates certain areas which
would become of considerable military importance in the event of war with
Red; namely,
a. The Halifax Monkton St. John area, sometimes called the Martime
_
Province area.
b. The Montreal Quebec area, sometimes called the St. Lawrence Area.
_

c. The Great Lakes Area.
_
(1) Niagara River Area.
(2) Sarnia-Windsor Area.
(3) Sault Ste. Marie Area.
(4) Sudbury Area.
d. Winnipeg Area.
_
(1) Winnipeg City and vicinity.
(2) Churchill, Manitoba Area.
e. Vancouver-Victoria Area.
_
(1) Ports of Vancouver and Victoria, area.
(2) Prince Rupert area.
EDIT: And it was pretty seriously close to happening: http://mostlywater.org/u_s_war_plans...sion_of_canada

Quote:
In March 1935, General Douglas MacArthur proposed an amendment making Vancouver a priority target comparable to Halifax and Montreal. This was approved in May 1935, and in October 1935, his son Douglas MacArthur Jr. began his espionage career as vice-consul in Vancouver. In August 1935, the U.S.A. held its then largest ever peace time military maneuvers, with more than 50,000 troops practicing a motorized invasion of Canada, duly reported in the New York Times by its star military reporter, Hanson Baldwin.

And, of course, the Canadian counter plan:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Defence_Scheme_No._1

Basically, Rush into the US, raping and pillaging, then run back across the border giggling like schoolchildren and waiting for Britain to save our asses.
