Default If a roommate damages your property...

Who covers the damages - is it you and your insurance, or theirs? In a situation where it is incontrovertibly their negligence that caused the damage.

Their liability insurance. Your policy likely doesn't cover damage done by roomies.

What if they are both renters (students renting rooms in a house in this case)...this isn't me, I'm just asking hypothetical questions here.

A friends laptop got doused with juice that came down through the light fixture from another roomie who spilt a jug of the stuff on the floor upstairs, and dismissed the incident, saying, too bad, you should have had renters insurance.

That doesn't sound right, since it was the other party's negligence that caused the damage.

Well you can take him to small claims court, or find another way to get the money.

Also does renters insurance really cover damage by juice?

It was probably a big misunderstanding, when you over-heard Janet and Chrissie talking. Mr. Roper will understand.

This is juice that came through the floor, not a casual spill...laptop will more than likely be a write-off - it filled the light fixture and then soaked the desk below it.

If they're "civilized", just give them a verbal beating instead.

I don't know about that. It sounds like a bit of a gay thing to do.

I've never heard of liquid soaking through a floor and then through a light fixture. that's bizarre. anyways, kill him and tell the authorities he was mixing juice and electricity.

How does juice go through the floor?

Was he drinking really really really acidic orange juice?

Its his fault the juice fell on the floor, is it his fault the juice seeped through the floor - I would go after the landlord. I have been in many multilevel houses and when you spill something upstairs it doesnt seep through downstairs - at least in the houses I have been.

You should have been at might work when a bozo employee set off the sprinkler head by accident. Liquid went through 3 floors.....

As far as the OP goes I am thinking SOL.

Right, but we're talking a jug of juice, not hundreds of liters of water.

If I was the OP person in question I would be ticked, but if I was the person being blamed I would do the same thing.

I would be like - this dodgy craphole cant handle some spilled juice, take it up with the landlord.

What are the odds the the juice seeped right on where the laptop was one floor down - weird.
