I can see the message now. They are using the image solely to put a perspective on how 9/11 is made to be a larger deal than nature itself, but in reality nature needs more focus from us". At least that's the message I see. The image alone has nothing to do with the environment/nature, but the words put it into context.

Still not an ideal image to do so, I'm sure there was a better way to carry it through.
Yeah, if that's what they are after, it's still terrible even ignoring how callous it is.

It's dumb and nobody gets it right away -- FAIL. Everyone who sees it doesn't get it and is offended -- you can't beat that.

I don't know, if you tell me the planet is an even more brutal killer than mass terrorism my first thought isn't 'let's preserve it', it's 'how the fata do we control this evil ball of clay, let's shoot nukes into the middle'.

I wonder what Brazil would think if I came up with a poster that said, the Tsunami killed more people than Cortez killed Brazillians.

Yah I am sure that would go over well in Rio.

I think you're on the right track with where the ad intends to take you, but drawing the wrong conclusion. We all want to prevent/combat terrorism post 9/11 and billions have been spent to achieve this. There are things environmentalists believe we can do to limit mother nature's fury by going green. The scale of destruction on 9/11 pales in comparison to the tsunamis, yet "we" have become obsessed with terrorism and still are fairly laissez faire towards the environment.

The problem with the ad is that image brought out too much emotion and people didn't even want to look at it for what the advertisers were trying to do. It failed for that reason, but I think the concept works.

I think that the relevance is that human activity which is destructive to the environment (deforestation) contributed to the overall deathtoll of the tsunami.

Link

"The sorrow I feel over the tsunami is magnified by the knowledge that a great deal of destruction could have been avoided," said Selvam Vaithilingam, programme director with the M.S. Swaminathan Foundation in Chennai, India and co-author. "In the five countries most affected by the tsunami, human activities reduced the area of mangroves by 26 percent between 1980 and 2000."

"Just as the degradation of wetlands in Louisiana almost certainly increased Hurricane Katrina's destructive powers, the degradation of mangroves in India magnified the tsunami's destruction," said Neil Burgess, a conservation specialist with World Wildlife Fund and a co-author. "Mangroves provide a valuable ecological service to the communities they protect."

EDIT: I don't wish to defend the makers of this tasteless and offensive ad, I just want to point out what their original train of thought might have been.

I understand where you are coming from, but I disagree.

I think the level of fear associated with each issue is relatively equal at this point.

Could be. I don't think so but we're in fairly subjective territory here. Looks like everyone can agree this was a tasteless ad at any rate.

World Wild Life Fund condemns "disturbing" 9/11 ad

"It is not a WWF ad," said Josh Laughren, a spokesman for the Canadian branch of the WWF. "We don't like it and we find it offensive. We find it as disturbing as anyone else."

Laughren said the ad was produced by an agency pitch to the organization.

"It was an unpleasant surprise. I guess they thought it was clever but it's not. We just hope that people will accept that it's not ours very quickly," he said. "It's so far out of line with how we operate."

I have thought the same thought several times. Only 3,000 people died in 9/11. Now while that may seem like a large number, 15,000 children under the age of 5 die each and every day from malnutrition. Far more newspaper ink, TV time and military force was spent on the 3,000 than is spent on the 15,000. And that 15,000 happens each and every day.

Not worth its own thread, and not worth resurrecting the Hitler photos thread, but kind of related to this thread...

German anti-AIDS advertisement depicts sex with Hitler.

They lied and got caught. Statement issues today (or yesterday) states:

"WWF Brasil and DDB Brasil would like to jointly express their regret for the unfortunate incident involving the 'Tsunami' ad for World Wildlife Fund Brasil. The ad does not convey either the philosophy of the client or that of its advertising agency. It was created and approved in late 2008, mistakenly, and was solely the result of lack of experience on the part of a few professionals from both parties involved. In no way was it done in bad faith or with disrespect to American suffering. WWF Brasil and DDB Brasil acknowledge that such an ad never should have been made, approved or published. We reiterate our apologies to all those who may have been offended by it. The two entities have worked together for three years to mobilize people, efforts and resources for the good of the environment. A single error should not obscure past successes, nor prevent future ones."

I think the message is obvious. We need to respect earth way more than we respect terrorists, cuz it can kill way more people and respect is earned by the number of people you can kill. Right? Stupid WWF.
