Thumbs up Indonesian construction workers have no fear of heights

These people are fearless! Look at that height! I wouldn’t even climb up that much ever. They have great balance and they do not know for fear!

I'm not saying they aren't good but I'm not that impressed either. Ironworkers across NA have been doing much the same since Otis invented the elevator, although currently in a much safer manner.

To say they have no fear of heights is misleading and stupid. They just aren't overcome by their fear.

I have to say from my personal experience working at the trade in Calgary and across western Canada, it can be a good high.

No it isn't. I have a fear of heights and there's no way i'd do that type of job no matter how much they paid me.

I was commenting on the thread title which is grabbing but inaccurate. I guess I could have avoided using 'stupid' but I've heard the phrase to many times before.

What you should probably do is not get so worked up about the post in the first place. It's not an unreasonable thread title.

I had a job a couple years back where I had to install glass 50 feet up in a scissor lift. I didn't realize I was scared of heights until that lift started going up and wobbling back and forth. Turns out I can overcome my fears. Anyway, the moral of the story is I'm not doing that again.

So, I have some fear of heights too but like the other people I worked with we overcame it. Too me it's stupid not be afraid of danger. I started young and I was confident of my body obeying my instructions. I'm not saying anyone is lesser because of not overcoming it as I'm afraid of spiders and have no inclination to overcome it.

Having a healthy respect for the dangers of a situation you're working under is not the same as having a fear about say heights.

I used to climb trees for a living and work out of a fifty five foot bucket truck. You overcome fear by gaining confidence in your equipment and in your self.

I also took a hover-exit course to work with helicopters. One requirement was to climb out of the helicopter while it hovered at about fifty feet and hang by your hands off one of the runners while they lowered you to a couple feet from the ground where you would let go. The trick with Helicopters is to not shift your weight too dramatically because any shift you make the pilot has to counter to keep things stable. When the instructor was giving us the instructions he asked us if we would let go while hanging at fifty feet in the air. Of course the answer was "no". He then said "well if your not going to let go there really is no danger". He made a lot of sense. It was fun.

They might not fear heights, but I bet they fear the wind

I'm not sure that it's so much a lack of fear as it is a lack of a choice. These guys probably don't have a lot of options as to how they make a living, and aren't really in a position to demand safety. It wasn't much different with the steel workers in NA back in the day, it was guys who had no other way to make a good living and didn't yet have the power to demand safety regulations.

That is just ######ed. I'm not exactly the most safety conscious guy on a construction site, but Jesus, I'd make damn sure I was tied off for that kind of stupidity. Hell, the one guy was wearing flip flops!
