Not suprised at the loss. Nice to see Ruiz jump right into the lineup. I didnt get to watch the whole game. What happened in the late innings? Team fall apart?

The Yankees came alive. Back to back HRs by Matsui and Posada in the 8th basically ended the game. The Jays tried to make it interesting in the 9th, but couldn't quite come back.
I think for all the talk about Yankee Stadium and its wind tunnel effect, New York is simply a powerhouse team with HR potential up and down the lineup.

A 200 Million dollar team SHOULD be a powerhouse team.
I think the most telling stat was the Jays being 1-43 when down in the 8th inning. No fight in these guys this year.

Jesse Carlson blows another game..oh well.
Been reason for a lot of doom and gloom around the Jays these last few days and rightfully so. Looking for positive..maybe even grasping for straws here, but I do like the amount of solid young arms the Jays have right now. If only Mcgowan could ever get healthy

Vernon Wells' take on signing big contracts:
Quote:
You sign that kind of a deal, (scrutiny) is going to come with it," he said. "It's a matter of going out and playing better baseball. You can never justify the amount of money anybody makes in this game. You don't make excuses for it. It's not my job to explain it or justify it. I've just got to go out and play the game of baseball like I have ever since I was a little kid."
|
From the same article:
Quote:
Expect Travis Snider to rejoin the Jays in about 10 days. He's been tearing the cover off the ball at Las Vegas but the Jays have been waiting to optimize his service time so that he won't be eligible for salary arbitration until after his third full season. That threshold will be assured within the next eight or nine days.

Another loss...
Why have and pay players like Rios playing if they are contributing to that 1-43 stat after eight innings? Wells is unmovable and Doc is soon to be moving. Will Leroy stay through the summer? Good riddance Rios.
Hmm, I am just trying to be entertained each game and that doesn't include winning or competing for a playoff spot since we know they are lost causes.
Ruiz is finally getting his shot and is looking like he shoulda been here sooner considering Millar's anemic output of late.
And in other news Chad Jenkins, the jays' first round pick this year has signed finally. He signed at an over slot deal and got more than the Astro's pick. Apparently, JP has been given the green light to go over slot for players.

Another quality start from Romero wasted it seems. At least he's something to look forward to for the future.

I haven't given up on Marcum either, not to mention Cecil looks like he could have #2-#1 guy stuff. You count in Doc or at least the quality arm or two that could step into the rotation and the Jays at least look good in arms especially when you think of competiton they could have for that #5 spot with the quality young arms.

No. Forget all that. Here's my thing about J.P. Ricciardi, the thing that really baffles the heck out of me: How can someone keep giving out contracts THIS BAD and keep his job and reputation? I'm serious. How?

a good friend of mine was at the game, booing him mercilessly for 14 innings. Wish I could have been there to help.

Oh, Vernon Wells also has a full no-trade clause in his contract. Well, sure, why not? Then, what difference would it make? This is the most untradable contract in the history of the world.

I enjoyed many tidbits from that article....including....
Quote:
In 2011 Vernon Wells will get paid $23 million. No. Really. He will get paid $23 million.
In 2012 he will have to take a paycut and will only get $21 million. Same in 2013. And same again in 2014.
This isn't a baseball contract. This is a testament to the power of mankind to do the impossible.

More fallout from the Rios move including former teammates questioning his desire:
Quote:
The road to Rios: Maybe the White Sox outfoxed the world on Alex Rios. Maybe he's going to wake up and earn every nickel of the $61.6 million they now have to pay him through 2014. But the tales we've heard from ex-teammates, and people who watched him coast through life in Toronto, make you wonder.Rios is guaranteed $12 million to $12.5 million every year from 2011 to 2014. And that's star money. But is he magically going to turn back into a star just because he's playing for Ozzie Guillen, in a hitters' paradise? Not if these reviews from ex-teammates are accurate:
• "He's not a winning-type player. He's a guy who just doesn't have that burning desire to win, or be great."
• "He was a guy who just didn't go after it. He'd be sleeping in his locker 10 minutes before he had to go out on the field. And not just once."
• "He wasn't the same player after he got that [seven-year] contract. It sure seemed like he was a lot more motivated when he was looking for a contract than he was since he got the contract."
Meanwhile, scouts we surveyed seemed dubious, too.
"This guy should be a perennial 30-30 [HR-SB] guy," said one. "But to me, he's a classic underachiever. If Ozzie takes the wrong approach, he's going to lose him. He's a guy you've got to go real slow with. But whether Ozzie has that kind of patience, boy, I don't know."

I'm really skeptical of those anonymous quotes. Most players, even off the record, as far as I know, really keep the comments about teammates off limits. Having 3 seperate quotes to an ESPN guy of all things and not a wiff to a local guy seems complete hogwash - perhaps red herrings from Riccardi himself, but I seriously doubt they're legit. Sure the guy is somewhat lazy, but not to that extent. This is baseball afterall. How much work does a batter really have to put in? . Still a crappy "trade" considering if they put in a couple million they probably could have gotten a good prospect. Bloody cheapasses.
