Britain imposes direct rule of Turks and Caicos isles
Quote:
(CNN) -- Britain says it has suspended the government of the Turks and Caicos Islands and imposed direct rule after allegations of systemic corruption and "serious dishonesty".
British Foreign Office Minister Chris Bryant said he instructed the British governor of the island territory to suspend the ministerial government and the House of Assembly for as long as two years.
Bryant said his order also suspends the constitutional right to trial by jury in the Turks and Caicos.
"This is a serious constitutional step which the UK government has not taken lightly, but these measures are essential in order to restore good governance and sound financial management," Bryant said in a statement.
"It remains our intentions that elections should be held by July 2011, if not sooner. It is also important that the

Wasn't Canada talking about annexing the islands at one point?

Yep, we sure were. Several times now with the most recent being maybe 5 or 6 yrs ago. I really wished we did. Spending Canadian money on a tropical island would have been pretty cool.

There was debate over Turks & Caicos, it was also suggested that Canada not only annex them as part of our Dominion, but also to make them part of the wonderful and glorious ocean playground known as Nova Scotia

I really don't understand why this hasn't happened; it'd be good for both sides. There'd be huge tourism development for them, and somewhere cheap to go in the winter for us.
Plus we could set up bases there, and if the US ever got too uppity: invade on 2 fronts. Boo-yah!

They wanted to join Canada but we said no because of tax implications and transfer payments. Despite the fact it would be awesome and a great place to vacation, it would be a huge economic drain on Canada.

If Turks & Caicos were part of Canada... man think of the boat people. You can practically swim there from Haiti. Then just hop on your domestic flight to Canada, and voila! The land of milk and honey.

I've been to Turks and Caicos and wasn't all that impressed. Not really much there. Then again, it was only a day stop on a cruise, so maybe I didn't see the 'real' island.

Let's trade Quebec for Hawaii instead.

When things were bad back in the day, that's when the people of the T+C asked Canada to be a protectorate (or w/e).
Hopefully the British effectively dissolving their government will piss them off enough to ask Canada for help again.

When things got better for them, Canada wanted to re-visit the issue but then they turned us away.

So it'd be like Newfoundland, but instead of incomprehensible dialect, fish and booze, it'd be sun, sand and booze? I fail to see how this still doesn't sound like a good plan.

Meh, I have 2 cousins that work for them, they taught me the secret recognition sign that puts your luggage on the correct flight and tones down the flight attendants from "bitchy" to "slightly snarky".

Are you trying to mess with my long-held prejudice against Newfies as drunken unemployed bums from a province of mud huts and leaky wooden boats? 'Cause let me tell you, that's what I love about this nation - 10 provinces with different kinds of drunkards.
