If you are flying, you are screwed. They wont let you in without a passport.
If you are driving, you might be screwed, but you might also be ok. Depends on whether the Americans consider an Alberta drivers licence to be a WHTI compliant document. I'd suggest calling the American Consulate and explaining the situation.
Failing that, you've got five days to tear your house apart and find your documents.

Coming back into Canada, you will probably be fine with just your drivers license. Get a sample of your DNA ready though, just in case...
Edit: You might also consider going down to the passport office in Shawnessy and seeing if there is any way they can get you a Canadian passport on an emergency basis. I think you'd have to surrender your American passport, but that may not matter.

How long will you be in the States? Make sure you bring your birth certificate and photo id so you can get a new passport while you're here.
Takes 4-6 weeks. You can expedite for about twice the cost.

My ex did this not long ago.
If you're in Calgary, go to the American Consulate downtown (across from Olympic Plaza) to report the passport lost. If you have a scan or copy of your passport it makes the process much easier but if not you can still fill out the form to report a lost or stolen passport. They will ask you at the doors what you are there for and if you tell them you have lost your passport and need to report that and reapply they are very accomodating.
Bring with you passport photo's as well as your birth certificate and all your proof documents that you are indeed an American citizen and you can fill out the forms to apply for another US Passport.
When my ex re-applied it took all of a week to get his passport back on regular service. I imagine if its expidited you could get it faster.
As for your Canadian Residence card, try going on www.cic.gc.ca I believe they also have an office in Downtown Calgary (Harry Hays Building if I remember right) where similar process if you go in and state you have lost your indentifying card, you can fill out a form to report it lost and then reapply for a new one. I don't know the timeline to get a new one though.
For both cases, if you can provide proof of immediate travel usually they are really accomodating.

I don't know about US passports, but you can get a Canadian passport the same day you apply. You might want to see if the US has a similar option.

If you were born in Canada and have a Canadian birth certificate or if you were born in the US and have a Canadian Citizenship card you can go into the Passport office downtown at the Harry Hayes government building on Monday and apply for an Urgent passport. You will need an application (available at any post office), a person to be your guarantor who can sign for you and has known you 2 or more years (must hold a valid, 5 year Canadian Passport), your birth certificate or citizenship card as I mentioned above, a piece of government issued Id with your signature on it (like a drivers licence) and 2 photos one signed by your guarantor. You will also need paid proof of travel (your ticket) and the fee $157. If you meet all the requirements you can pickup your passport in 24 hours. Make sure you read the application instructions carefully and follow all the instructions to the T.

You cannot get a Canadian Passport the same day you apply unless you prove you have dire circumstances and need to travel immediately. The soonest you can get a Canadian passport for regular travel is 24 hours and even then you have to meet all the requirements necessary for this service.

I know personally someone who applied for a new passport first thing in the morning, and had the new passport in their hands by the afternoon.
If you want to do this, make sure your references will be available to be phoned that day (they will be).

OT but is Canada the only country in the western world where an adult passport is only valid for 5 years?

A little off topic, but somehow I managed to lose my Canadian passport while on a drunken adventure in NZ. After I got all the paperwork together and sent it in the mail, it took about three weeks to get my new passport (there wasn't a consulat in Auckland, I had to send everything to Wellington).
So I'm sure you shouldn't have too big a problem, especially being in Canada with passport offices in every major city! I was even able to get an emergency passport without a birth certificate (however my new passport is only valid for 2 years because it is "temporary").

You will not be able to get a Canadian Resident Card that fast. You can get an emergency USA passport in that time. Contact the US consular office in Calgary:
Calgary
615 MacLeod Trail S.E.
Calgary, Alberta, T2G 4T8, Canada
Telephone
(403) 266-8962 / 266-8692 x 0 (24h)
Fax
(403) 266-6630
Since you wont have proof of status in Canada (card) you will probably be sent to Immigration Secondary and they will verify that you are also Canadian.
Might be able to get a Canadian Passport that fast... But the Americans are probably faster.

I don't know, but I found this link, and it appears we'll be getting new passports starting in 2011 that will be more secure and valid for 10 years: http://www.canada.com/topics/travel/...a-e7efbe8bf89b
It looks like they'll also have new biometric features, including fingerprints, so hopefully problems like that woman faced in Kenya won't happen again.
