Wisdom Teeth...

This was my experience...

Went to the dental surgeon and handed him my X-rays my dentist had done.

He put them up, looked at them for 5 seconds turned to me and said "yeah i'm not doing these unless you are put under".

So I was put under and after the surgery the surgeon tells me it took them 10 minutes to pop out the first 3 and 60 minutes to get the last one out. They had to first split that tooth into 4 sections because it was completely hooked under the other molar. That was the start of the problems with getting it out....

To say i was sore after would be a huge understatement.

Mine were impacted so I went to an oral surgeon when I was 14. I think a large motivating factor was that my parents had just dropped umpteen dollars on braces over the previous 3 years to get my teeth all straightened out, and the impacted wisdoms coming in were threatening to start pushing all my teeth around.

I got the sedation. I was bruised on the jawline afterwards for a week or two and needed the T3's. I remember not being allowed to eat hard foods for awhile (i.e. carrots) because of the bone taken out of my jaw so it was weakened and prone to breaking. I don't really know if that's just my memory being melodramatic or if that was what actually happened.

Also, I got the procedure done on my birthday. I don't recommend that!!

I'm out and recovering as we speak. 5 farting minutes and good by gauze, and good riddance I hate you. Already had one T3, not doing anything yet. The atavan that should have knocked me out, didn't work. I even tried reading the economist to make me drowsy. Oh man, these nex two three days wil suck.

I had mine out a little over 2 years ago and it killed me for about a week. I don't react well to anesthetics and went into some type of seizure/tried to fight back and had to be restrained. I woke up tied down. Awful.

The best part, I went to the dentist 2 months ago and the did an x-ray and they asked me if I ever thought about getting the last one out.

FFFFFCCCCKKKKKKKKKKKKK. THEY FORGOT ONE.

Mine were protruding so they were easier to take out, sort of. I didn't go under because 99% of complications come from going under, that and it is just a money grab. No one should go under unless medically necessary or unless they are a p****.

I actually got to watch the doctor dig them out with his chisel while awake. Couldn't hear much though because I was listening to my discman at full blast (Metallica S&M in case you're wondering).

I went to Harry Potter the next night (HP 2 IIRC and against my wishes as I wasnt' a believer at the time, although that movie did suck but I digress). Even ate popcorn and drank thru a straw, both of which are huge no-nos when you get your WT out.

Had little pain and it healed really fast.

I used my bottle of T3s to lessen the pain of having Math 30 and 31 every day, all morning for an entire semester. I was prescribed about 20-30 pills and I would literally take one each day before class until they ran out. Made for a mellow semester.

Yes. Some really bad things to do. If you ever suck out your clot or get it infected... your life will become hell. Not only will it hurt like hell, it'll hurt like hell for days and you'll bleed profusely.

Get sedated. The drugs they give you are pretty fun...for the 30 seconds you're awake anyway.

Had mine out this morning... Couple questions:

1) Normal to puff out like a chipmunk?
2) Is it normal to still have some bleeding 7 hrs later?
3) T3 for the win?

Yes on all three.

I am fortunate to have retained all 4 of mine, but I did play nursemaid to an ex-girlfriend who had her's out.

All of those things are entirely normal. Unless you have a sensitive stomach, in which case I would recommend finding a pain killer without an opiate in it.

Like everyone says, it all depends on you, and of course your teeth. No way in hell was I stayin awake for that s***(all four had to come out), and I'm glad I didn't. He said mine were so hard to get out that I couldn't even see and keep them afterwards because they all shattered when they got yanked out. I can't even imagine if I was awake for that.

As mentioned, I had mine done this AM. Took the sedation pill - I was awake, but veeeery relaxed. Had all 4 done, and 2 were impacted. The procedure took ~2 hrs, and there was breaking involved, I got stitches, but the actual surgery/extraction was less unpleasant than a cleaning - thanks to the sedative felt like it took 15 mins. The aftermath is pretty brutal so far - still bleeding and much pain.

P.S. Re teabags - I guess I'll ask the wife and see if that makes me feel better.

T3s and a Clint Eastwood western (Hang 'Em High) got me through the first night when I had mine out. It wasn't as bad as I thought. I was awake for the procedure. One tooth wasn't frozen enough, so he gave me some more freezing and could have probably dynamited the thing out. It turns out that tooth was fused to the jawbone. For others getting this done, don't pay for the anasthesia - just take in some aggressive music and tune out.
