Anybody see this movie yet?

Hearing lots of good reviews, wondering if CP thinks its worth checking out.

Going to see it Sunday afternoon... I can't wait.

I heard somewhere that this movie was made by the team that was supposed to do the HALO movie, but somehow the HALO aspect was cancelled so they made Sector 9 instead? Anyone know anything about that?

Well Peter Jackson produced it and I believe he was attached to Halo movie at one point.

I think what I heard was Peter picked the director for the HALO movie, but the studio didn't want him, or wanted him removed, so Peter stuck by the director and just took his team to do Sector 9 instead.

The studios involved, I believe Fox and Universal, could not agree to terms, at least that's my understanding. But Bloomkamp had already done significant amounts of pre production on Halo and brings *not really a spoiler* a dose of that aesthetic to District 9. I'm so glad I knew nothing about this movie going in. It is a doozy.

Peter Jackson, director/producer of the "Lord of the Rings" films, handpicked Blomkamp to helm an adaptation of the blockbuster video game "Halo." He spent five months doing pre-production on the film before it was pulled out from under him.

"When 'Halo' collapsed, it happened very quickly," Blomkamp recalls. "Before I knew it, all of a sudden the movie was over and he said, 'Fran [Walsh, Jackson's co-producer and partner] and I feel very bad for you. We can help you get another film made right away so you can just segue into it.' "

It was Walsh who suggested turning "Alive in Jo'burg," Blomkamp's 2005 short film about alien encounters in Johannesburg, into a feature film.

"When I made the short, it never occurred to me that it could be a feature, but when Fran said it should be a feature, I agreed 100 percent," he says.

I must admit, ever since seeing the trailer to this movie, I've been excited for it. The reviews make me even more excited. I hope to see this sometime next week.

TechCrunch said it was gonna be another sleeper hit.

A lot like Taken.

Guess this must have opened a bit earlier here in NZ or something.

Thread should be 10 pages long already.

Had to see this again the day after. Just didn't quite fully sink in the first time.

Dunno, if i'd call it a sleeper, I haven't seen a movie this heavily marketed in awhile.

I went in pretty cold and I thought it was good. Definitely not the type of story I had expected. I liked the lead (Copely) and the alien weaponry was something else.

I haven't seen this yet, but I think the less you know about it, the better. I've been avoiding all the previews/marketing hype for it for the most part.

Wow! Definitely what I wasn't expecting.

It's not for everyone, but it is creative, unique, and very well done.

One of best of the summer IMO. I'm tried of seeing this movies made about cartoons, comics books, and sequels of them. Finally something fresh.

Wow.

I went in knowing nothing about it except that Peter Jackson produced it....best movie of the summer so far. I want to go see it again.

I'm glad that I didn't know anything about it, really surprised me.

And for anybody that's seen it here's a pretty good laugh for you courtesy of MTV

That's awesome. Really looking forward to some more reactions from the calgary puck community. Its not because its the Second Coming or anything that i thought the thread would have grown, but because of the concepts and execution of this thing, regardless of what camp you're in, and to what degree, if any, you're divided about the different possibilities for a story that this film presents, and whether you think it made the right choices.

I watched one review and they even said they won't spoil anything because it is much better to go in knowing nothing.

Going Sunday, looks awesome.
