Snow Leopard, Yo. (Official: Ships Aug 28th)
The gold master is out there (10A432) as of right now, if you know where to get it. It ships at the end of Sept though, so it's not too much in advance.

I love the ability to do screen capture videos without needing an external program. I'm very excited for this update ... looks like everything will run a fair bit quicker.

Wow, I can't believe Open CL. I thought technology like that being available on everyday PC's would be a long way off.

Yeah, I'm pretty stoked. I've already ordered and paid for my copy. Since I bought my Macbook after June, it only cost me $13 including shipping. Normal cost is only $29 though.
I should have the downloaded one up and running sometime tonight or tomorrow.

For the most part, it's just a faster, more efficient version of the OS you're using now. There are some interface improvements though, like integrated Quicktime and some enhancements to Finder and Stacks/Expose. 64bit core applications (Mail, Safari, iCal, etc) too. Just imagine the MacBook you're using now being even faster and more responsive at a lot of the day-to-day things you do.
Other things like opening the door for applications to use your GPU for performing heavy processing, as well as a better designed system for managing multi-core processors.

I am still running Tiger on an older MBP.
I have the Leopard Upgrade disk from a friend...
For Snow Leopard, do you always upgrade Leopard to Snow Leopard or can you install Snow from Tiger.
Reason why I'm wondering is I have some time at the start of Sept. and wanted to get Snow Leopard on. I was also planning on doing a full-reformat.
Also, does anyone have experience with upgrading Tiger to Leopard w/o the re-format? Any problems or would you recommend just re-formatting?

Tiger to Leopard is a painless upgrade, I don't know anyone who had issues with it. Just be prepared for probably a largish download to bring it up to 10.5.8
I don't think you will be able to buy Snow Leopard as a standalone retail product and jump from Tiger to SL, and least not from what I've read. It's either an upgrade for existing Leopard users, or you are going to get it new on a new Mac that comes with install CD's for that model of hardware.

Forgive me for my ignorance, but I am somewhat new to the mac world as well.
Is this a completely new O/S or is just an upgrade for the current one? Is it like going from Windows Xp to Vista? or More of a service pack type thing?
How neccessary is it to get it? Will they continue to support the old O/S for a while?
Although $29 to upgrade is not a bad price at all, I must say.

Apple doesn't really do huge OS updates. They tend to alternate feature packed for consumer or for developers/backend work. This is the latter.
This release is not very splashy from an everyday user stand point. Almost everything new is really behind the scenes. It is a necessary upgrade in so much that Macintosh developers will make use of the new features right away and you may find that the minimum requirements for stuff you get is 10.6.
It's painless to upgrade and cheap so you might as well do it. It will also give you back like 4 gigs of HD space due to a bunch of streamlining they did.

The way Apple handles it's OS updates impresses me. A new one nearly every year and with a low cost going forward (hope this trend in software continues).
Much nicer then 4-5 year cycles of major platform shifts like you see in the Window's world.
Anyone know if we'll be able to simply plug in some payment info and download the whole update without needing a physical disk?

I don't know about a digital download... But Apple doesn't have the same anti-piracy practices that other companies have. They don't even use product keys for their OS.
So what I usually do is buy the disk from Apple, but then download the disk image from a torrent site.

I've been running it for a couple days now. So far so good. I just went the upgrade route, though. It was completely painless. It even kept my Bootcamp partition in tact (important, houses all my VB projects for my clients).
Two things I'm not liking though. One is no logitech driver support for my mouse, and the other is Safari AdBlock isn't working. Relatively pain free otherwise.
I really like being able to drill down in Stacks!

That may make me actually use stacks ... stacks are just one of those things I look at through squinty eyes.
Can you take video screencasts? I had heard somewhere that you could but I haven't heard a confirmation on that ( edit: nevermind, I see it's on apples official page ... woot!). Also, when you plug in a camera, can you direct it what to do instead of having it automatically open up iphoto? This is a pain with the iphone ... there is a program that lets you do it, but it was listed as free because snow leopard apparently allows you to do it.

How the hell can that be the actual packaging!? I disregarded it thinking it was too strange looking to be real ... now I see it on the apple site. Didn't see that coming.
Regardless, it's pre-ordered. Looking forward to it greatly.

Will I need the family upgrade for $49 or will the $29 upgrade work fine on both of my mac's?
