Sunderland sign Lee Cattermole from Wigan today for 6 million pounds:

Probably my favourite signing of this close season so far, bigger clubs including Liverpool were rumoured to be interested in him earlier this summer. Along with Lorik Cana (former Marseille captain) coming in, this improves the midfield hugely compared to last season. If we could sign one more solid defender I would be happy with the squad. Bring on Bolton!

Haha who said anything about him being "to the rescue"? Maybe we should just wait and see how a few results play out.. either way Cattermole's a solid pick up for any mid table Premiership side with good upside too, but I doubt you've seen enough of him to make any judgment..

Cattermole is very good. He's on the fringe of making the England World Cup team. He needs playing time to try and show Capello he's good so he went to a smaller club instead of riding the bench at a bigger club.

With Hargreaves international career pretty much over, Cattermole is the most likely replacement in the future.

Yes because most of the spots on the big clubs are held by non-Englishmen. A player has a better chance of making a national squad by playing fulltime for a smaller club then riding the bench for a big club. The national team manager always wants players who are in form.

One example would be Joe Cole of Chelsea. You would think he's a shoe-in for the England squad but if he doesn't regularly make the Chelsea starting eleven, why would Cappello choose him? He would choose a winger that played alot, like Lennon, or Downing or Ashley Young.

Large clubs rotate players because with their depth they can. Large clubs also play in Europe against top competition = more experience.

Simple fact of the matter is that playing for a larger club and being able to compete for places on that team reflects the ability of the player. Top clubs go after top players. Top players make the national teams. The cream of English footballers are sought after by the top clubs because they can hold their own.

Explain then why Michael Owen would turn down cash AND playing time to go to Man U on a pay as you play contract. By your logic he'd be better off at Hull. Why does Beckham want to get out of his multi $ LA contract. Sure he's getting loads of playing time there.

And what's your point with Joe Cole anyways besides the obvious managers don't pick injured players? He's been out since January, but you knew that ... right? Before that he had played 6 games under Capello with 3 goals. If Cole returns to form he gets his England spot back .. simple as that.

I'm not sure Owen going to ManU is a good decision. He'll get 30 games maybe out of the 60 that ManU will play. He'll be a substitute alot. Would you take a part-time Owen over a full-time Agbonlahor who will bag 20+ goals? Maybe not bad like Hull but Owen could have gone to a mid-table team like West Ham and play more. A player like Tevez left ManU cause he didn't get enough playing time.

Your Beckham example doesn't really factor in cause he gets loads of playing time no matter where he plays.

I think the England starting 11 is pretty much set. But for young players who want to improve and crack the squad either this World Cup or in the future, they must play first-team football. To me for players under 22, first team football for a smaller club is better than riding the bench in a rotation system at a big club.

A part time Owen. What makes you thing an unproven season high of 12 Agbonlahor would be a full time player at Man U?

Jack Wilshere would disagree with you. He'll get more attention and better career development and experience rotating at Arsenal than he would if he was a permanent starter at Hull.
