Sure is easy to say all of this now... but come on, really? Do you want to just let people in when they claim to be a citizen and something doesn't make sense?
I'm glad they investigated it and I'm glad it worked out in the end.

They said they investigated it, yes. But despite the obvious truth, they came to the wrong conclusion. They did not go far enough to actually determine if she was who she said she was, and if the star's insinuation is to be believed, the case was closed until they started reporting on the situation.

We had Jason Kenney do it for that case IIRC.

Umm... if I produce about 8-10 pieces of documentation that proves my identity, I would like to think that I have proven my identity.

The only reason there was any "investigation" was because this was in the media. I'd be pretty pissed off about losing 3 months of my life because of a government screwup.

Even those pieces of identity wouldn't get me into a country. And is it a stated fact that the investigation only proceeded when the media got a hold of it? Are you taking the media for fact? (You know how they love a good story)

I'm going by the government's letter to Kenya (see previous post).
Those documents alone wouldn't work, I agree, but in combination with a passport, what else could one reasonably provide?

Well, considering all black people look the same, I understand where our officials were coming from. You're right though, absolutely no racial profiling going on here. We can completely trust our government.

Thank you for finally posting all of the facts.

The faux-outraged only need one side of the story, preferable the victim. The other side of the story is not required nor welcomed as it has the potential to dismiss / belittle the indignation.
All that has been proven so far is that isn't enough to show your Shoppers Drugmart card or drycleaning tab to prove your passport is real. Who really carries all that crap around the world anyway?
I'm going to hold judgment until the rest of the story surfaces. If it's as bad as the faux-outraged presume, then I'll happily skip the faux- and go straight to outraged. However, I will not agree that this present "up-in-arms" behaviour is or was ever appropriate prior to all the facts.

I don't go out of my way to make sure I clean my wallet out before going on a trip.
And a number of years ago I was flying into the States without my birth certificate (Travel agent said D/L was enough.) I had a stop in Edmonton before going to Vancouver where I'd pre-clear US customs so I called up US customs to ask how he would handle a person coming through with a faxed copy of his birth certificate. He asked if I had Canadian banking and credit cards on me, and I said yes. Then he asked "Do you have any Canadian Tire money in your wallet?" When I told him yes, he said that if he ever had any doubt about somebody being Canadian, that is enough for him.

I suspect "a number of years ago" was pre-9/11. And I'd also think there would be a difference between the U.S -> Canada versus Kenya -> Canada. But that's all supposition.

Yes, it was pre-911 and yes it was Canada-US.
My point was the person had other items to back up her claim. Sure- none of them on their face would be enough to grant entry into a country. But combined with the correct document (passport) it added weight to her claim.
Never mind she had 2 other pieces of gov't issued photo ID on her; Driver's License and OHIP card.

Agreed. That's what we know so far.

One other thing, for all the people alleging racism, I would venture that no racist (i.e. whitey) saw this file until it hit the papers. All the lower-level functionaries at Canadian outposts are locals. Again, if she'd just paid the bribe like she was expected to, her various ID would have been magically sufficient. Not saying our system is good or efficient, but there is a bit much outrage.

That's just the way things work in Kenya - I'm not endorsing it by any means.

This story is a total embarassment. The high commission dropped the ball on this one and if anyone thinks that racial profiling wasn't involved they're just kidding themselves.
