I am normally taking my first coffee break shortly after 9 in the morning. I can't even imagine not needing to be at work until 9, what the heck would I do before then?

Sleep.
I can't believe there are people in this thread that think that starting work a 9 is a bad thing. I would say that it is a little early but considering what time most people have to get up it is pretty decent.
Getting up early sucks.

A) I would answer but you would reply with the most insulting one liner you could think of.
B) You do need a life. Step away from the computer and go outside.

A) PM it to me and I'll stop
B) I'm allergic to sunlight. Do you want me to die?

When I was in Australia I lived directly above a club that ran from 9pm to 5am Thursday through Sunday. I also lived next door to a very large construction site for a skyscraper that operated from 6am-5pm Monday to Saturday, and for some reason required constant jackhammering.
You can imagine what happened when they tried to jackhammer on Sundays...
In short, it could be worse man. Get ear plugs...

You wouldn't be able to sleep til around 8am, if you had to be at work at 9am?
I used to work with a girl whose shift started at around 10am, and she would always complain that she was so bored before work. She would always describe how she had been aimlessly cleaning her house since 6am, and couldn't think of anything else to do, and would just think, "geez woman, just sleep in a bit later, problem solved!".

This thread is funny. Fact is everyone works and lives on different schedules. You can't keep everyone happy. I used to work in a bar 5 days a week from 5pm to 2am. Getting up before noon was what I considered early. Now I start my job at 7am, and I am up by 5:30 or so. In short, sometimes things suck and you just have to deal with it.

Please tell me you have a story for that one and it didn't just come from a google search.

Sorry, google search. It's an old email joke that circulates under the heading: Never Piss Off a Guy With a Backhoe.

Yes, 7am construction times suck. I deal with it every morning as I live in a new area of town. Just keep in mind that sometimes you will not get to sleep as late as you planned at many points of your life. Realize that this was one of those times and move on.

Well, I am often on the otherside doing environemental excavations and drilling where we're waking up the neighbours.
Typically though, myself and the contractors we hire are mobilized from somewhere and everyone just wants to get the job done so they can get home to their families. It sucks to be working away from home in some craphole town for weeks at a time, so I don't feel bad for starting as soon as we can.
Being in Calgary though, I imagine it was a local contractor.
