So, I've decided to try to put together a last minute trip to India for about 4 or 5 weeks in September/October. Has anyone ever been there on vacation? I'm mostly looking at going to northern India (specifically the far north in Ladakh etc.). Any advice would be great though about must see areas and so on. If I have time I would like to go to Varanasi and definitely Agra (for the Taj Mahal etc.).
India requires a tourist visa but I'm finding the application process to be pretty confusing. The office appears to be in Vancouver but I'm a little unsure about how to go about the process through the mail. Anyone ever done this by post?

I’m always amazed these sportscasters and announcers can call the game with McDavid’s **** in their mouths all the time.
Recently went on a trip there, for my VISA i went to a travel agent and they arranged my VISA and such, as the office was in Vancouver.
One thing to suggest, if you can, avoid spending the night in Agra. The town sucks, the people suck. Go there for the day, see the Taj Mahal and its wonder's, and go back to a different town.
Ok, so it turns out that a "last minute trip to India" is impossible because the time it takes to get my passport/visa does not match my time off. Dang it. India will have to wait. . . how's patagonia in September?
Since India won't work, I would go to Surrey. You can meet tons of Indians, eat some good Indian food, buy some bootleg Bollywood DVDs and you don't need a Visa.

I actually got my visa settled within a matter of a week. I had to pay alot...but the travel agent arranged express service, and me and my friend both had 2 Travel visas to India from Monday and picked it up on Friday.
My wife and I went to India in March of 2007, we got our Visa's from the office in Vancouver in about 2 weeks after we mailed it out.
We didn't hit up any of the far north areas, farthest north was Amritsar in Punjab. But we hit a lot of the other spots doing all the travel via train:

Haha....Surrey = India

If you thought this season would have a happy ending, you haven't been paying attention.

Hey I'm in Surrey right now and there aren't many Indians here...
Update: I've decided to head to Cambodia/Thailand/Malaysia/Singapore in September (Yep, the "green season") because of their relaxed visa requirements and I've never been to those places before. Fly into Bangkok and out of Singapore. I put Cambodia in there because I want to see Angkor Wat if possible. Anyway, I'm hoping to get in a good mix of city and beach time. Hopefully I can get some climbing in in Thailand!
India will have to wait until I have more time to get my crap together. This is a present to myself for finishing my PhD. and I only have September open at the moment.

Sweet, in Cambodia, you might want to spend a bit of time at Angkor Wat to see a few of the diff parts. Check out Phnom Penh too, very eye opening. Thailand, Malaysia and Singapore are high on my list as next to-do's, so I'll be interested to see what you had to say.

I'm heading to Thailand for my 3rd time this coming January for 6 weeks. I usually make a visa run at some point and did it in Cambodia last time. Angkor Wat is amazing. I filled up a 2GB memory card in 1 1/2 days. Try to time it so you can get a sunset/sunrise photoshoot at Angkor Wat. I was able to get a driver for the entire day for $20 USD. You can see the 6 or 7 main temples in one long day but there are many lesser ones if you haven't had enough by then. Be prepared for some fairly aggressive trinket sales people around the entrance/exits.
As for climbing in Thailand, Krabi is the hot spot for rock climbing. And if you do go, Railay Beach is definitely where you would want to stay. I saw it from a ferry as I was heading to Koh Lanta. It might be the most stunning beach in Thailand. I have no idea what kind of weather you might encounter in the off season though. Have fun.
