Golden Gate bridge to spend $50m on nets to save jumpers....
Only in San Fran does this get support.....suicide jumpers off the Golden Gate may soon get a net to save them from themselves. The fact that some have made the plunge and lived has led to flow of support for some netting to "save" suicide jumpers. I get that many are troubled souls only requiring a dose of expensive meds to turn their lives around. But come on......$50m for the net?
I say let em do as they please. Won't they just find other ways?

I don't know what kind of netting they use but really? I would guess that $1m is maybe spent on the netting and the other $49m is used to put up the net and to funnel money into crooked politicians pockets.

Doing a bit of math, the bridge is listed as 2737m. Dynamic rope that is dry treated, lets say is $10/m. Lets say you need 50m of rope per 1m of bridge length. Thats $1.37M of rope.
Labour : cost = ?
additional infrustructure = ?
design = ?
I'm not sure how they came up to $50M, but it even the most conservative estimates would probably have this at $10M?

I’m always amazed these sportscasters and announcers can call the game with McDavid’s **** in their mouths all the time.
I think if someone really wants to commint suicide they'll just find another way to do it. The new issue they'll be faced with is thrill seekers jumping off the bridge on to the netting for fun.

I agree with this. Unless the Golden Gate is so special that people will only commit suicide on that particular bridge and not any of the other long spanning bridges in the bay area among many other ways to commit suicide, this is a waste of money. Reeks of typical myopic thinking ignoring common sense and the facts of life.

From a political standpoint, my guess is it isn't to save lives, but to prevent them from doing it on the GGB. The GGB is such a huge touriest attraction, being along side Alcatrez, Fishrman's Wharf (?), GGB Park and of coarse, the bridge. I've never been there for a jump, but I'd imagine if it were during the day time, shutting down areas to get S&R in hurts tourism and lessens the GGB experience.

Thats really not much of a thrill... and I'd imagine you'd get arrested and fined for jumping.
