Ha, sure, that might hold up in a text book, but in reality it boils down to individuals and their own feelings and actions. Of course there is more of a systematic racial history among whites, but i think it's foolish to say a minority can't be racist simply because the numbers aren't in their favour.

One of the biggest racial incidents in NY's history was the Crown Heights riots....a clash between Blacks and Hasidic Jews that once in a while still surfaces today. When two minorities clash (and who's been oppressed more than blacks and jews!), who's at fault? Joe McWhitey?

No it's not. How familiar are you with Black America? You've spent a lot of time in predominantly black communities I assume, or are you just basing this off a bunch of second hand information and erroneous assumptions?

I don't know why people waste their time trying to figure out if someone else is being racist. If I saw a confederate license plate I'd figure that the guy loved Dukes of Hazzard. If I saw it on a flagpole, I'd figure the guy was indeed from the southern US.
I don't buy this crap that people are sporting a confederate flag because they're out of the closet black haters.

It seems to be the latest thing to take childhood nostalgia and display it. I saw a Ford SUV last week that had the Ford logo covered by a batman sticker. There's transformers suff everywhere. I've seen it on cars, hell, I saw some guy wearing a transformers belt with a shirt and tie.

I think people need to stop trying to find negative meaning in stuff.

I have and still do at times.

What he is saying is not completely untrue, though it doesn't apply everywhere or for everyone, obviously.

There truly is, in some cases, a systematic belief that they are owed something by society as a whole. I liken it to the sad state of First Nation folks in many pockets of Canada.

Like anything else, there are extreme cases of this everywhere, but that doesn't mean its the norm. Often it's a cultural thing, which i have yet to understand. They really do make things harder on themselves in many instances, which is so unfortunate.

And to anyone that does not believe that blacks, and other minorities, are not capable of rascism, give your head a shake. I have seen it multiple times and it is just as ugly as it is when its whites on any of them.

I've lived in poor white neighborhoods and poor black neighborhoods, or at least very close to both (University campuses don't really count as part of the neighborhood IMO) and I've found the same situation in both.

Pointing to skin color is foolish, in my experience the people of those communities were quite similar, most were hard working people with little education struggling to get by. Some had a chip on their shoulder and were looking for the easiest way to make a buck. The color of the skin in the area didn't change much at all.

I dont disagree with this...but we are talking about blacks and their plight in this particular instance.

Which doesnt mean it doesnt happen elsewhere and in other cultures, but that has nothing to do with what is being discussed in this case.

I don't know, the original post sure painted a 'blacks only' picture of this problem.

Let me get this straight: when you see someone with a confederate flag licence plate/sticker/flag/belt buckle your first thought is "that guy is a fan of the Dukes of Hazzard"?

I don't know. To me that's like seeing someone in a naval uniform and thinking "that guy is a fan of Popeye".

lol... no kidding. I'm not saying every guy who puts up the confederate flag is a Klan member, but to analogize the Confederate flag to the Autobot logo might be the stupidest thing I've read in a while.

So what you're saying is that its a waste of time to assume someone with a Confederate flag is being racist, but assuming he's Dukes of Hazard fan is not? Why is one assumption a waste of time and the other not?

Ignoring possible negative connotations of symbols seems overly naive to me. If I see a guy with a Third Reich flag, I'm going to assume he's racist, not that he's a history buff that studies 1940s Germany or a fan of WWII movies.

yeah, I don't buy the "he's a fan of the Dukes of Hazzard" bit either. I thought the Confederate flag was really cool once, too. When I was about 13. Then I figured out what it stood for.

Well you didn't write the original comment so I'm not sure why you're getting defensive.

Why don't you enlighten us and explain what it stands for? I thought it was the battle flag of a nation fighting for its Independence.

I'm just saying I don't look for meaning where there likely isn't any.

The whole point of flags is to convey some sort of meaning.

It was, yes. And the swastika was once primarily known as a good luck symbol.
