Default Calgary Triathalon Road Closure?

So this morning, on my way back from Elbow Springs, the intersection at Highway 8 and 69th street was blocked to allow cyclist through for what I presume was a Triathalon.

The intersection was manually controlled by police allowing cars to go through in all four directions when there were no cyclist coming along. Needless to say it was backed up in all four directions, and I ended up waiting 30 minutes to make a left turn onto 69th.

What was brutal was the folks coming out of Discovery couldn't turn right onto highway 8.

Anyway, this was my vent... I would have expected that they would have had signs indicating that the route was going to be used for an event and to plan alternate routes.

Yeah, took about 20 mins to get from Richmond Rd. heading East on Glenmore to 37th. And I saw 2 cyclists the entire time.... The urge to car slalom the barricades was strong today.

Dan Ouimet, the event's co-ordinator, said the local triathlon community and the City of Calgary have welcomed the race.
"There hasn't really been a multi-sport or running event of this magnitude in Calgary," he said.
Quote:
When you add the swim, bike and run complexity into it, it adds a lot of additional challenges … We haven't had anything of this nature in Western Canada other than Ironman Canada, obviously, which is a fabulous race but we're trying to create another memorable race on the racing circuit that happens here in our own backyard."
Quote:
"We've had questions about traffic … but I think I'm pretty confident in saying that 99 per cent of the residents have said this is great for the community."
Ouimet has also been working with Tourism Calgary to promote the event as a sports tourism draw.
The event has a three-year contract in Calgary, but both Oiumet and Bentley are hoping it stays for many more.
A lot of people from out of town, a lot of professionals came to town to race. On a weekend there is a max exodus from the city it's a good little attraction to have. If you into sports and have never witnessed one of these they're great to go watch - wonderful atmosphere! Nice talent and eye candy running around and generally everyone in a great mood!

That is lovely, however a few signs to indicate the road issues would have been a nice touch (necessary if you ask me). Thankfully not my neighborhood, but if I were a resident of Discovery Ridge, I would have been furious. Even the road constuction folks are nice enough to post notices about road closures and delays.

Totally agree!

I'm surprised there wasn't. Sometimes there are and people are totally oblivious to them - sometimes they mess up and don't tell people well enough.
