Report links Ortiz to PED usage
http://www.tsn.ca/mlb/story/?id=286219
So Ortiz, who'd been a part time player prior to 2003 is now being named as 100 MLB players who tested positive for performance enhancing drugs. Now Ortiz has always been a big guy and did show the ability to hit prior to 03. But I can totally see this, and it would explain how significant his production drop has been the last couple of years.
If Griiffey, Thomas, and Jim Thome can avoid being linked to steroids they'll probably be among a select few hitters from the last 20 years who might get into the hall of fame. A lot of those guys from the 70's and 80's who didn't quite make the cut before have a new window here to gain admission.

Baseball should just release the whole list and get it over with. I don't want to get 2 players every month for the next few years...

No surprise really. All the speculation that Ortiz's recent struggles were something other than not being totally jacked all the time is foolish. I'm sure Ortiz can track his rise from part-time status to superstar and drop to his current status based entirely on his injection/consumption of PEDs.
As for the guys from the 70s and 80s. I think there are enough guys still coming through the pipelines that second chances are going to still have to wait for the veterans committee... and it's pretty clear the veterans committee doesn't hand out admission very easily.
It's becoming pretty clear that steriods/PEDs was so widespread that it will be easier to name those who weren't juiced/suspected.

What is prompting these people to release random names at different points throughout the season? Perhaps this list has been constructed in a DaVinci Code format that names are only released when the New York Times decyphers the code.
Also, David Ortiz is surprised. Ofcourse you are! Now go lie to Katie Couric, big fella...
I hate baseball.

Two points. First, baseball should just give everyone who comes forward by x date a free pass into the hall if they qualify.
If you don't come forward and get caught after you become ineligible.
Second, bill simmons was asked if there was anyone who at this point he would be shocked to hear used peds. He said griffey and jeter. That's it.
I would add schilling to that list and maybe maddux, otherwise everyone else is fair game.

Does Ortiz being a doper really come as a surprise to anyone?
Marginal player, comes to the Sox and all of a sudden is a huge power guy, his close friend is caught for doping and his numbers have plummeted since he left.
Another reason the Mitchell report was a total joke.

Well if Greg Maddux used PED's than he did a damn good job of making sure he looked like a skinny accountant while doing it.
I guess the issue is that the players took the test in confidence thinking it would be kept private, and now names are leaking out. So thats why they probalby haven't released the entire list.
As for Manny being on the list...I'm shocked they even bothered, he's already been caught still using.

And if a player tests positive for steroids?
"Ban 'em for the whole year," the slugger said.

Former team mate Bronson Arroyo says he's probably on the list too. He's got the benefit of not being a big name player so he won't be one of the first names thrown out there. But at least he admits to something. I can at least respect those who say they took this stuff that has since been banned when it wasn't really being tested for, so long as they don't test positive afterwards when it has been banned. It's the Rafael Palmeiro types that disgust me.

Mark Teixera and Johnny Damon were quoted in the New York Post today wanting to make the list public to vindicate the players that are innocent.

Baseball is ridiculous. If nearly all the stars of a sport I watched doped I would quit watching. The game has no integrity and it was really boring to begin with, with all due respect.

Personally I think baseball is ridiculous for banning steroids. Not my body and someone getting paid $25M/year can suck it up and suffer the pains later in life. Let them all juice up to make it fair and lets see the long ball again.
Just like I would like to see two Olympics. One with the natural crowd and one where you can juice. I want to see someone run the 100M in 5 seconds flat.
