If you don't know, you are clearly not 1337 enough to know.

So my question is this;
1. When you text, do you use short cuts or do you try to use proper English?
2. What the heck does 1337 mean?

Elite... gamers formed the word.

1. I use proper english when I do anything, including text. If my message is too long I might substitute a "u" for "you" but typically I'd rather just start a new message.
2. Elite. 1=L, 3=E, 7=T.
3 (Bonus). Here's how this thread's gonna go.
Guy 1 - Yeah I use proper grammer
Guy 2 - Grammar is important
Guy 3 - Texting and driving is more dangerous than drinking and driving
Guy 2 - Proof? Link?
Guy 3 - *provides link to study*
Guy 2 - Not good enough
Guy 4 - I hate when I'm around my friends and they're texting other people. If you wanna talk to those other people just leave and hang out with them
Guy 1 - Yea but sometimes it's good to communicate
Guy 4 - People just communicate too much nowadays, I miss back when
Guy 5 - I don't even have a cell phone
Guy 3 - But seriously texting and driving is so dangerous. These people should be off the roads
Guy 4 - Yeah, and people who drive too slow in the left lane
Guy 1 - I think texting is awesome and it makes communicating with people so much easier.
All while spouting individual side arguments about texting while driving, being anti-social around friends, face-to-face communication, and other social issues that come with technological advancement.

I spell properly in texts, no shortcuts. Makes you look like a moron. Especially when you're 25+.
1337 is only for those who are 1337. Sorry.

my question is why people continue to text and drive, knowing it's a stupid and dangerous practice.

The good thing about the iPhone is that if you misspell something it will fix it for you, it doesn't put up with that abbreviated crap!
although it corrects your lol to LOL

If I'm texting and the message has lots of info I will use shortcuts. 160 characters isnt' much.
If I am bbming or emailing from my phone I will usually write out everything. It helps that my phone corrects my spelling.

I write the sentence out completely. But then I have about a limit of about 5 text messages a day and then I get fed up. Then I do it the old fashion way. I phone the person.
The next great app would be a voice recognition app so I can talk into the phone and it sends a text message. ... Wait, isn't that what a phone is for? Doesn't it already do that? I am confused.
Anyway, send a text message to your home phone. See what happens.

I'm trying to stop texting altogether. It's fine once in a while, for convenience. But when it gets to the point where you're out with a friend and he/she spends twice as much time staring at the device in their hands than talking to you, it's not a good thing.
I try not to do that. Basically it's saying that you'd rather be somewhere other than you are now, which is an insult to your company.
But ya. Complete sentences.

I try to use proper English, but with Telus I believe the limit is 136 letters, so often I get done my text, see I'm at 147, and got back and start chopping words.
Also depends on who I am texting. My mom gets full sentances and punctuation, my girlfriend who is the queen of the shortcuts gets more shortcuts.

I'm used to using T9 so I use correct words. (wow, I just used the word "use" in all three tenses in one sentence. Well, sort of...)

Had an idea!

I use t9.
And I also agree with Rube. Nothing worse than being out with someone who spends more time looking at his phone than talking to you.

That's weird, because Rube hasn't said anything in this thread yet.
