Not to forget, his contract is massive and that's why they are shopping him then.
This year is not without criticism for wells, but he still has a neutral trade value if you ask me. I feel that Juan Pierre would be a fine addition because he is being paid a lot to not play everyday and he is an "anchor" so to speak, so that almost cancels out wells.
And Kemp is not a "much" better player and has never hit more than 18 HR. He has a better avg and ops but wells isn't that far out of the discussion.

I agree lets face facts about Wells. He has been an all-star twice in his 7 seasons, soon to be 2 out of 8, he is a career.280 hitter with seasons of .245 and .264 in 2 of his last 3 years, it is great that comparisons and projections were made but since then all Wells has done is show that they were 100% wrong.
Matt Kemp is matching Wells for power this year and beating him in BA, OBP and OPS.
Much better player may have been the wrong term, but he clearly is a better player (close to much better) and a much more valuable asset considering his age/contract.

The Dodgers are not trading Matt Kemp. He's only 24, making $467,000 and is already in his 4th season in the majors. Meaning he is young, cheap and a borderline All Star. To compare Vernon Wells with him almost absurd. Wells is old, no longer hits for power, and is poorer defensively than Kemp. All the talk about the Dodgers "alleged" unhappiness with Kemp came out of New York, because the Yankees were trying to steal him for Robinson Cano. As far as Kershaw, the Blue Jays will get Lincecum out of Frisco before they get Kershaw from LA.
If I was Dodgers GM this is what I would offer.
For Halliday only:
James McDonald {p}, Randy Wolf {p}, Xavier Paul {of}, Scott Elbert {p} and Chin Lung Hu {ss}.
Now I don't follow the Blue Jays, so I don't really know what there needs are. These are good prospects {and Wolf} who I would be willing to give up. I would also consider giving up James Loney in the deal but that would leave a hole at first for LA.
For Halliday & Wells:
Andre Ethier {of} and Jason Schmidt {p}.
After JP stops laughing I would say that if he took the deal he could sit in the McCourt's box to watch the world series this year.
PS. Matt Kemp just hit a grand slam in the top of the 10th against the Brewers.

Dodgers could be the team that takes a chance on a player like Wells to turn things around being in a new city.
However at this points Wells brings down Halladay's value on the market if that is the case. I am thinking something like Halladay + Wells for a Thank You card.

How about canning the GM first? Seems he's made the mess they are in resulting in this notion of blowing things up. I think they should keep Doc and look at the surrounding mess that JP created.

MLBtraderumors:
1:43pm: Ricciardi tells Sherman he expects to keep Halladay through 2010 and try to win next year.
1:40pm: Ricciardi still says he'd have to be wowed to move Halladay, according to Peter Gammons of ESPN.com. Gammons says it doesn't look like there's a "wow" deal out there.
Following the trade of Cliff Lee to the Phillies, its looking like Doc will remain a Jay.

I think they should trade him and get the best value possible, I think what they could get this year will be quite a bit better than what they could get for him next year as he still has one more year in his contract. The worst case would be losing him for nothing (Doc signing somewhere else after his contract is done), and it wouldn't surprise me if that's how it played out.

The Blue Jays would get two first round picks in that hypothetical, not nothing.

Am I missing something? If he plays out this year for the Jays, plays out next year for the Jays, contract is up, he signs somewhere the Jays still get two first round picks?
Ah ok, I see!

I think they're sandwich picks between rounds 1 and 2, and IIRC that assumes that Halladay signs a big money contract.
I can't remember what the Jays got for Burnett, but I think it was a 1st and 3rd round pick and he signed for a lot of money.

edit: Sylvan explained it better than I do
The old team (Jays) gets the 1st rounder of the new team, plus a "free" pick between the 1st and 2nd round.
As for Burnett, the Jays got the "free" pick, but the Yankee's first and second round pick went to Texaria and Sabbathia's former teams (because the players were better than Burnett) and the Jays were stuck with the 3rd rounder. Pretty smart move by the Yanks to sign three Type A free agents in the same off-season and subvert the system.
This wouldn't happen with Doc because there is no way any better players are on the market.
