Icon44 UPDATED: In NJ, with pic(s) of NYC

EDIT: See 2nd page for update and pics of me representing Riders from the top of 30 rock.

So I'm going to a wedding in New Jersey this weekend.

We are staying near Long Branch.

plan on taking the train to NY on Saturday and spend the day seeing stuff like the Empire State building, Central Park, Times Square etc, Sunday is the wedding and Monday I'm coming home.

My main question is in regards to the Riders game on Saturday night. Are CFL games available in the NJ? If I went to a bar would they have it? Can I watch it online?

If anyone has been to the area I'm going to, or lives there, any tips would be nice but for the most part I have my weekend planned.

If anyone has any really good things to see in the MSG/Empire State/Manhattan area of NY let me know but like I said I really just want to see the main attractions. If anyone is going to suggest seeing a baseball game don't bother, the Mets game isn't until 7pm on Saturday and we don't want to take a 90min+ train ride home at midnight the night before the wedding after spending a whole day in NY.

Also pretty excited for the wedding but I've never been anywhere in NA (except TO 15ya and Vegas 3ya) so it'll be the first time I've ever seen the ocean.

I would really love to go but unless I can get a family member to make the trip on Friday night I don't think I'll have time. They'll probably want to do lame stuff like visit with my cousins who live out east and I only get to see once every few years.

I hate family commitments....ask the cousins to take you...then visit in the car

Considering it is my cousin that is getting married I doubt he'll have time.

Actually it is kind of funny, he's Irish (I'm half Irish half Italian) and he's marrying an Italian girl from NJ. I'm pretty sure her life revolves around people making lame Sopranos jokes at her expense.

Also it is her family that is from NJ so I won't have any family there with a car other than my cousin that is getting hitched.

I don't know if you can stream TSN in the states, but all games are available through streaming video. When I was in New York a few years ago, I found a restaurant around Time Squares called the Great Canadian Restaurant, they served all Canadian beer, their menu was heavy on the beef side, and they had CFL games playing on the tube. don't know if its still there, but it might be worth checking out.

Central Park is always a great walk, especially if you can hit Strawberry fields, and get a picture taken in front of John Lennon's walk up. Its always worthwhile to go to Times Square and just walk around some of the shops. There's also a Fredricks of Hollywood store in Manhatten with some of the hottest clerks you'll ever see. There's also an indoor porche dealership thats pretty cool.

If you can get up the Empire State Building its a great view, but the lineups tend to be long on weekends, you can also go down to the UN and I think they still do guided tours.

Don't go up the Empire state building. Go up 30 Rock. Better view.

Thats a great point, too bad that SNL is in hiatus, it'd be nice to score tickets to see it live.

I was in NYC in sept and the Empire State building lobby and the surrounding ground floors were under construction and you couldn't see much.

I had two days in NYC and didn't do half of what I wanted. Of course I had some pretty obscure things to see like the Hello Deli, the Cosby's house and the Ghostbusters HQ. My advice is to plan out what you want to see and familerize yourself with the subway.

I was in Hobokan NJ about a month ago visiting an uncle. Getting to NY from there was really easy. I'm not sure if it runs by your location, but check into the PATH train. It only costs about $1.75 each ride and takes you right into Manhattan from NJ.

Thanks for the suggestion Windsor but we are quite a bit south of there. The train from Long Branch to Penn Station (right at MSG) is $12 and is a 90 minute ride. The train you suggested is only 20 minutes into NY so we are quite a ways further out of town.

We're actually so far south we're almost closer to Philly than to NY but I have no interest in seeing Philly.

They have the fastest and tallest roller coaster in the world. Also, they have the #2 ranked wooden coaster in the world, although some claim it should be #1. I've never been on it, but I've been on the #1... It was awesome. Kingda Ka is the fastest and tallest, El Toro is the wooden one. DO IT.

Spent a week in NY last August. You're going to love it. Make sure you eat at 53rd and 6th after 7:30 PM!!! Don't miss it if you're in New York. The lineup is worth it.

Do 30 Rock instead of the Empire State building. Skip the Statue of Liberty.

Central Park is pretty cool to see for a bit, but it's just a park.

Times square at night is very cool.

It is impossible to do NY in a day, so I would suggest not really trying to plan a ton of stuff. Empire State building or Statue of Liberty are half a day standing in line, so maybe leave stuff like that for when you have more time in the city.

Museum of Natural History is cool too if you're into that sort of thing.

Everything is a lot bigger and further than you think it is. Take advantage of the Subway and taxis, especially if you're just there for a day.
