Wow you'd use a calendar to time how long it took the files to copy.

I remember when my computer had these little beads on a piece of string that I would slide back and forth. Of course, I had the one with white beads, which cost 4x more than the ones with the brown beads... but I digress.

We don't really need to know about those beads of yours.

No, because if you buy it for say $300-500, in a year we will see them on sale for $45 and then the following year for $10, and all the while you will be kicking yourself for not holding off and buying the 4 TB one.
And in 15 years you will say "I remember when a TB was huge, but now that will barely fit one hologram."

I will still buy one because I am a sucker for these kind of things.
I have a fish tank with fake fish that plugs into my UBS port for example.

Since I discovered you can use your USB Flash Drive to speed up your Vista system I have been much much more happy with my laptop. So +1 for Vista for providing ReadyBoost.

Any benching I did with ReadyBoost showed only minor improvments going from 1 to 2 gigs. The transfer rate for USB is just to slow for much improvement. It might be faster than swapping to a HDD though, I really can't remember the comparison there.

I connect to work via a VPN and then use Oracle tools to develop. Including Toad. I gave up trying to use my laptop. I would be waiting to swap between the tools. I have a dual monitor setup so quite a few things going on. It was just not workable.
I stumbled upon the ReadyBoost thing by accident. I have an 8 gig USB thing which has 4 gig allocated to ReadyBoost. I can now use the laptop without any of those issues.

looks cool, but makes sure you check into file system specifically file size limitation.
I like my 16gb kingston flash drive but the 4gb files size limit has impeded my efforts at times.

Can't you re-format it? IIRC 4GB is the limitation by using FAT32; could you not format it with NTFS?
