Thrashers/Maple Leafs make a deal
To Toronto:
UFA rights to Mike Knuble (37 years old - 66 ov)
Prospect Maxim Mayorov (taken 4th round by Columbus in the 2007 NHL Draft)
2011 2nd (Atlanta)
To Atlanta:
Craig Conroy - 37 years old - 64 ov - 1 year remaining at 2.26 M
Paul Gaustad - 27 years old - 63 ov - RFA (will make 1.5-2.5 M depending on the length of term)
We will save a couple million in this deal and bring in an extra forward which works great for us. Toronto gets Knuble who should have a good year for them. Thanks to Rob for the talks.

I like this move for Atlanta. Thats a fair bit to get for a grid UFA who's going to need a very pricey long contract.

I put a bid in on Knuble, I can see why Neil went with this deal. Good move.

Yeah thanks again for the offer. It was appreciated. I had two offers on Knuble since I put him on the block a week ago. I had to take the best offer.

Geez Neil, I thought you were kidding. Love this deal for you. I don't see how guys Knuble's age have any value when they're UFAs but everyone has a different opinion. I learned the hard way with Doug Weight, never again trading for a UFA that old.

Knuble is a 66 ov and has a 74 SC. He will be good in the SIM this year.

Knuble is definitely a decent player who will do well in Washington this year. And no worries Neil, you have to take the best deal so it's all good. Great return considering you got Knuble for Pesonen.

Exactly. When guys are that age they hit the wall hard. I've always been a bit unclear on the rules surrounding the re-signing of UFAs. If they retire during the first year of the contract, is the team responsible for the remaining 2 years?

He signed a 2 year deal in Washington. He's good for 20 goals each year.

Ian and I had this convo yesterday and in the rules I believe it says if they retire in the 1st year you are responsible for the remaining 2 years (buy them out), otherwise they can be cleared outright.

The biggest risk with these old UFA guys is that they'll keep playing. Look at Mike Sillinger right now, Hesla is praying that he'll retire so he can come off the books. Knuble probably did find a good place to play in Washington. But fart 6 million and to give pieces off your roster is way too much for a 20 goal scorer.

Too much for a UFA that old. These contracts can look atrocious in the 2nd and 3rd years and tend to destroy a teams cap situation.

I like this deal for Toronto. Knuble will very likely play out his new contract and the fact he might end up on a line with Backstrom and Ovie in Washington can result in a solid re-rate. At worst he will play top 6 in washington.
Conroy will be third lining this year, with healthy Olli and Langkow, I doubt he sees any top 6 minutes. Gaustad a warrior type player will never put up big numbers.
Mayarov is a solid prospect who has already come over and looked good in the A.
edit forgot the 2nd, gets better for the Laughs.
So my edge to Toronto.

That's what I thought it was too. Guess a bit of a gamble here for the Leafs, Lord knows I've taken a few of them and come out on the wrong end, maybe it makes me a bit leery, but still, I think that's a fair bit for a guy like Knuble.
