Default Any ideas/suggestions for BBQ side dishes?

Well tonight I am having some friends over to my place for BBQ and I was wondering if the brain trust of CP had any suggestions for some side dishes. So thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Make some corn bread muffins.
If you really want to spice them up, you can add cheese, maybe some jalapenos, or sweeten them up with a little drizzle of molasas, or maple syrup on top.

GO CRAZY MAN!

There is a metal tray/dish you can get for BBQ'ing veggies - run out to Superstore and grab one (it's pretty cheap), and then BBQ some mushrooms, zucchini, broccoli...

Green gazpacho: avocados, cucumber, cilantro, anise or fennel (use the whole bulb and stalks). Just puree it all in a blender or food processor; no cooking. Add a bit of lemon juice and salt. Mix a bowl of finely chopped chilies and maple syrup, and serve this on the side along with some sour cream, for people to mix in to suit their taste. It's a delicious and easy dish that really complements whatever you're making on the grill.

Also, I second the corn-bread or corn-bread muffins vote.

Was just going to say this, but do it out of the husks for a much sweeter and smokier taste. You have to be careful outside the husk though. Cook 'em on the grill for about 12-15 minutes but turn them every minute or so.

BBQ tip:

Use vegetable oil on the BBQ. Olive oil has an extremely low flash point and just lights on fire/burns off almost immediately.

I do the same thing, and depending on what is in the house the ingredients get cut back to potatoes, butter (or margerine), onion, salt and pepper.

Instead of doing potatoes on the grill, a potato salad can be a nice, cool addition to a BBQ on a hot day.

Homemade tater salad...
Chop up (about 1 inch cubes) and boil some potatoes (red or yukon hold are best). Cook them until they are not crunchy anymore but not so mushy that you would make mashed out of them. Run them under cold water and toss with a bit of lemon juice or red wine vinegar (just a little so they don't discolour). While the taters are cooking chop up some green/red pepper, celery, radishes, red onions, chives. Some people add pickles, but I don't care for it that way. Add miracle whip (or mayonnaise and vinegar) to taste plus a couple of dashes of Franks and a teaspoon or tablespoon of prepared or dijon mustard depending on your taste. Season with salt, pepper, celery seed, and paprika. If you like, add a layer of bacon bits on top after mixing all the above together. I also put deviled egg halves on top if I'm feeling really ambitious.

It's a fair amount of work, but if you do it a few hours before hand, you just pull it out and everyone will love it.

(and don't do storebought! Nasty!)
